Dick Grayson was a 12-year-old circus acrobat, the youngest of a family group called The Flying Graysons of Haley's Circus. Dick joined the group at a young age, having been trained in acrobatics since birth. While on tour in Gotham City, he heard "Boss" Tony Zucco, a well-known and feared crime lord, threaten the performers unless the circus owner paid the extortion money. The owner refused, and that night Dick watched in horror as his parents' tightrope snapped, causing his parents to die as many of Gotham's elite looked on. Young Dick felt responsible because he didn't warn his parents in time. Shortly after the tragedy, Dick was placed in an unresponsive youth services system on the basis that social services were full. He was beaten by several prisoners, and was later sent to a Catholic orphanage. Bruce Wayne rescued Dick by adopting him as his ward because the boy didn't want to replace his deceased father with the billionaire. Frustrated by the lack of attention from his new guardian and the mystery still surrounding his parents' deaths, Dick left Wayne Manor one night to solve the crime on his own - only to stumble upon Batman, who was also investigating the murder. When Dick returned to the circus, he was confronted by Zucco's business partner Eddie Skeevers who almost killed Grayson, but Dick was saved thanks to Batman's intervention.

Costume

Nightwing's current costume is made from a version of the fire-resistant Nomex material, coated with tri-woven Kevlar. It is excellent protection against damage and is also electrically insulated. Instead of a black cape for stealth, the suit is light-sensitive, darkening when there is more light in the area. His current attire is a stylized red "wing" on his shoulders that extends to his hands, coloring his two middle fingers, over a black torso and legs.
