The protagonist has unkempt, wavy black hair and dark gray eyes. For most of his civilian outfits, he wears a pair of black glasses. While wearing his glasses, he has the appearance of an ordinary boy. However, when he takes off his glasses, his eyes give off an intense look. His default outfit is his winter school uniform, which consists of a black jacket with red buttons with the Shujin emblem on the pocket, a white high-collared shirt with chevron details on the collar, and red plaid pants.

As Joker, his outfit consists of a black ankle-length tailcoat, a high-collared vest with gold details, black pants, brown-black ankle boots, and a pair of red gloves. His mask is a black and white domino mask resembling a bird. His expression and demeanor are also markedly different, and there is a strong air of confidence about him compared to his usual self.

Joker wields knives and pistols. The knives serve as his physical weapons while the pistols serve as his ranged weapons. While he uses them often, they're essential if he runs out of energy to use for his personas. In addition, he doesn't appear to have a specific weapon of choice.

Backstory

Akira Kurusu becomes the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group whose purpose is to steal the hearts of corrupt adults in order to reform society. Initially, the group he founded was only to put an end to Suguru Kamoshida's vicious and predatory abuses against the school's students. The initial members consisted of Ryuji Sakamoto and Ann Takamaki, who were victims of Kamoshida, as well as Morgana, a mysterious cat-like creature who wants to discover his origins and restore his true form. However, due to reencountering the corrupt politician who forced him into probation while celebrating the end of Kamoshida's tyranny, he officially founded the group in earnest. The members who later joined him include: Yusuke Kitagawa, Makoto Niijima, Futaba Sakura, Haru Okumura, and Goro Akechi.

Akira Kurusu is a Persona-user who had little to no influence on the world and was surrounded by the corrupt society. He was a regular student at Shujin Academy. However, beneath his quiet demeanor is a strong-willed human who is the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a rebellious group who changes people's hearts. In the Metaverse and in the Locked Rooms, he is referred to as Joker, which is his code name.

Metaverse

the general public are imprisoned. However, certain distorted desires, such as an overwhelming desire for control or suicidal depression can result in personalized spaces known as Palaces forming. All of these personalized locations correspond to certain areas of its owner's interest, and are representations of the distorted desires that caused its creation, powered by a Treasure, or an item of significance to its owner. Usually, the Palace's host is unaware that such a place exists, and most events that the Shadow encounters there are of no relevance to the real person. Most Palaces have no direct effect on others and only affects its owner's mindset by making them entrenched in their distorted beliefs.

The Phantom thieves

The Phantom Thieves of Hearts is a group of persona users largely consisted of former victims of Kamoshida and Masayoshi Shido (or his co-conspirators), and their goal is to confront "corrupt adults" by stealing their "corrupt hearts," and change the world in order to rebel and fight against the complex, sophisticated and well-ingrained system of slavery they are trapped in, reinforced by the General Public's selective apathy that enables abuses against them to basically go unchecked and unopposed. They are willing to exploit the supernatural if it means bringing the masses freedom and liberation.

Persona

Personas are formed by individuals who find themselves in the Metaverse and are dealing with feelings of frustration of being wronged or taken advantage of. Should the person decide to rebel and take revenge, their Shadow Self calls out to them, forming a mask on their face. Their eyes also turn yellow, indicating their Shadow Selves are merging with their owners. Ripping this mask from their face formalizes their contract, causing the Shadow Self to turn into their Persona and take form. The process of tearing off one's mask is particularly painful, as it leads to excessive bleeding. Once the contract has been formed, the person then receives a special thief suit that represents their idea of a rebel, and the mask becomes a normal mask that they can freely take off without pain and serves as the conduit for their Persona abilities.
