Bastard son of a General Lieutenant Hanazawa and a geisha who lost herself in madness after being abandoned by Hanazawa, Ogata poisoned his mother and was raised by poor grandparents. Was despised by soldiers for being an illegitimate child, hence his insulting nickname "Wildcat"—a slang word for geisha that also means "deceiver". Seeking in vain his father's acknowledgement, shot his half-brother, Lieutenant and Flagbearer Yuusaku, during the Russo-Japanese War. Helped orchestrate his father's murder alongside anti-government rebel Lieutenant Tsurumi, whom Ogata betrayed.

Enjoys guns, fishing, anglerfish nabe—the dish his mother cooked. Smooths back his hair in a form of self-soothing or self-praise. Has subtle feline mannerisms such as seeking high places or sniffing new objects. Dislikes any form of emotional vulnerability or dependency, incompetence, long baths, shiitake. Ogata seeks validation and to prove that societal hierarchies are meaningless. His goal is to get into a military academy using Ainu gold—to rise in military ranks.
