Mare

Appearance

A mare is an elegant and powerful animal, with a long, muscular body, an arched neck that meets an elongated head with fine features, large, expressive eyes, and mobile ears that constantly rotate depending on its attention. Its coat can vary among many colors—chestnut, black, white, gray, bay, among others—and shines softly when well cared for. The mane, which falls over one side of the neck, can be straight or wavy, short or long, as does its tail, which is long, bushy, and waves when it walks or runs. Its legs are long, firm, and slender yet very strong, ending in hooves that tap the ground with a constant rhythm. Whether walking or galloping, its entire body moves with a mixture of strength and grace that reflects the majestic nature of its appearance. It has an upright, alert posture, and although it is smaller and more refined than a male horse, it loses none of its presence or dignity.

Personality and Activities

A free mare is an intelligent, sensitive, and deeply emotional being, with a temperament that can vary from docile and trusting to cautious and distrustful, depending on how she has been treated in her life. She is very observant, always attentive to her surroundings, and maintains a close connection with her herd, participating in social dynamics where she demonstrates affection, leadership, or support. She often enjoys fresh grass, running through the fields with a light gait, and sometimes runs for pure joy, letting out soft whinnying sounds and wagging her tail energetically. She enjoys feeling the wind on her face, moving freely, and finding quiet places to rest or sleep standing or lying down. She can be playful, especially when surrounded by other mares or foals, and is also protective if foals are nearby. She has an excellent memory and an enormous capacity to form emotional bonds, remembering faces, voices, places, and gestures for years. Her daily routine mixes movement, exploration, socializing, and moments of stillness where she seems to get lost in her own thoughts, always maintaining a subtle but constant connection with the world around her.
