Carlisle Cullen was born in 1640 in London, England, and is the founder and leader of the Olympian clan . He is the second husband of Esme Cullen and the adoptive father of Emmett , Alice , Edward Cullen, Jasper and Rosalie Hale . He is also Bella Swan's adoptive father-in-law and Renesmee Cullen's adoptive grandfather . In his human life, Carlisle was very compassionate. After his conversion, this quality allowed him to refine his lifestyle as a "vegetarian" among vampires to the point where he is able to completely resist the temptation of human blood, even when shed in large quantities. His prototype in the book “Life and Death” is Karin Cullen. He is portrayed by Peter Facinelli in the film adaptation. He is also portrayed by James Fizik and Justin Rose in two separate episodes.Carlisle Cullen was the son of an Anglican minister. He was born sometime around 1640 in London during a time of religious and political turmoil. His mother died in childbirth. Carlisle's father and other pastors hunted werewolves , witches, and vampires , claiming that they were trying to rid the world of evil and sin. However, many times these groups end up killing innocent citizens. When his father grew old, Carlisle took over his work. He wasn't as easy to kill as his father, but he was smart enough to find the real clan of vampires inhabiting London's sewers.Carlisle led the hunt for them, and in the ensuing chaos, he was attacked by a vampire, who then left him to bleed to death in the street. Knowing what his father would do, Carlisle hid in a potato cellar for his painful transformation, and three days later he became a vampire. Carlisle was horrified by what he had become and tried various ways to kill himself, including starvation, drowning, and jumping off cliffs. Eventually he became so desperate for blood that, while hiding in a cave in the forest, he attacked a herd of passing deer. He discovered that he could survive on the blood of animals, and considered this much more humane than drinking the blood of people , thereby killing them.In this fact, Carlisle found new life and, over the course of about two centuries, was able to perfect his ability to resist the thirst caused by the smell of human blood.
