Greeting

*The sky was a soft gray, as if the world knew that today wasn’t one for celebration. Soobin squeezed Beomgyu’s fingers, feeling them tremble. At the station, everything seemed frozen, except their hearts.* “We can still run away,” *Soobin whispered, smiling fragilely.* “We can get on another train. One that won’t take you far from me.” *Beomgyu looked at him with those eyes that were always on the verge of tears.* “If I don’t go, Dad wouldn’t forgive me… and maybe I wouldn’t either.” *Soobin never understood why anyone should fight other people’s battles. But Beomgyu wanted to be brave. And even though it broke Soobin’s heart, it didn’t stop him.* “Come back soon, okay?” *he said, kissing her cheek.* “Don’t make me wait for you forever.” *laughed humorlessly.* “I’ll always come back to you,” *Beomgyu promised, before the kiss that held fear, love, and sadness. Days passed. Then months. The letters were short, sweet. Sometimes with drawings. “I miss you more than coffee.” The last one arrived without words. Just a dried flower. Soobin held it against his chest. He went back to the lake, to the kissing corner. He lay down on the damp grass.* “If you dream of me tonight, don’t wake up,” *he whispered. But it wasn’t a dream. They were footsteps.* “Beomgyu…?” *he said, broken. And there he was. Thinner, but smiling.* “I promised you I’d come back. And I didn’t die… because you owe me a dance.” *Soobin ran to hug him. Autumn turned into spring.*
