Alter Jeanne d'Arc (ジャンヌ・ダルク・オルタ?), Avenger-class (アヴェンジャー, Avenja?) is an Avenger-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaro in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order. She is also the only boss character of the Ruler-class during the events of the Orleans Singularity. If God truly exists, then surely divine retribution will befall me. Also known as Jeanne Alter (ジャンヌ・オルタ, Yannu Oruta?), she is an alternate version of Jeanne d'Arc. However, just because she was named "Alter" does not mean that she is simply an alternate version of Jeanne d'Arc. Instead, she is the embodiment of vengeance attributed to Gilles de Rais, a Marshal of the French army who grieved over the death of Joan of Arc, created using the Holy Grail shortly after Joan's execution in 1431. Being a Heroic Spirit and the dark opposite of the real Joan, she was originally summoned by Gilles in the Ruler class, but can later be summoned by Chaldea in the Avenger class.[2]

Jeanne d'Arc's unique trait, which allows her to be canonized, sets her apart from the typical heroic spirit. There is no chance of summoning her alternate form. However, Jeanne Alter's existence is based on a combination of Gilles de Rais' anger, prejudices, and desires mixed with her essence. The result of this unusual combination is a completely fictional version of Jeanne d'Arc that was never intended to be summoned.[2] Jeanne Alter can therefore be seen primarily as the embodiment of Gilles de Rais's deep-rooted prejudices and feelings, which stands in stark contrast to the traditional image of Joan of Arc. As a result, Jeanne Alter takes on the form of the "She-Dragon", resurrected with the sole purpose of taking revenge on France.[3] She embodies the image of a saintly woman, fiercely committed to justice, unwaveringly fueled by an uncontrollable anger towards society. This form is closely related to Gilles de Rais's idea of Joan of Arc - a manifestation that highlights his deeply flawed views and feelings.[2]

Appearance Jeanne Alter displays a striking resemblance to her original counterpart, albeit with distinctive features. These include a noticeably pale complexion, yellow eyes, short-cropped blonde hair in an updo, and a darker color palette for her armor, flag, and cape. From Stage 3 onwards, Jeanne Alter's armor becomes more revealing, and her shoes become high-heeled. Notably, she gains long, flowing hair that reaches her ankles. Personality Jeanne Alter is a ruthless, cruel, and stern-minded woman. Despite retaining some of her saintly nature, she serves as an embodiment of retribution against humanity. She constantly harbors mistrust towards her comrades and those around her, and maintains a belief in God that lacks sincerity.[1] She happily denies the existence of God to believers, considering it entertainment, and strongly disapproves of the concept of "having faith", believing it to be harmful.[4] She is prone to wage war alongside her comrades against God, taking pleasure in killing to advance her "cause".[1] She displays a penchant for unbridled destruction, even to the point of destroying humanity, as her purpose in life is to continually kill until her strength is exhausted.[4]

Through various circumstances, Jeanne Alter, despite her fictional nature, was able to respond to summonings as a Dark Saint Woman.[2] The specific details of her summoning remain unclear. She does not immediately resist when summoned, but her trust in the summoner, especially if they are humans, is constantly clouded by suspicion. She can also display fanatical laughter when under increased stress.[1] Her forces then capture Orleans, killing Charles VII in the process. Over the course of their campaign, Jeanne d'Alter and her forces destroy many cities and kill many people. One of the most famous is Lyon, where Jeanne d'Alter defeated and cursed its protector Siegfried. She then orders Vlad and Carmilla to kill her. Marie Antoinette soon intervenes and helps the group escape by having Mozart repel Vlad and Carmilla with Requiem for a Dream. Jeanne Alter orders Marthe to follow them and observe. Agreeing with Vlad's concerns, she returns to Orleans, ordering him, Carmelia, and d'Eon to continue destroying France. Jeanne Alter summons Charles-Henri Sanson and Lancelot when she returns to Orleans. Upon learning of Marthe's death, she wonders if she committed suicide and is annoyed that she remained sane despite her Madness. She finds it more likely that Marthe fought as hard as she could, which is why they cannot let their guard down. She orders Gilles to contact Carmilla while she prepares to leave with her new Servants. Gilles tells her that she is the real Jeanne when she asks who she is. He reminds her of the betrayal and ridicule she suffered in her life, and Jeanne Alter states that it was all a mistake that must be corrected. She agrees with Gilles that her revenge is just, saying that his words give her strength. She then orders Sanson and Lancelot to mount their wyverns and go with her.

Jeanne Alter confronts Ritsuka's party at the ruins of Lyon after they rescue Siegfried. She then orders her personal dragon Fafnir to burn them, but Jeanne and Mash block it with Eternal Luminosity and Lord Chaldeas. Jeanne Alter is forced to retreat when Fafnir is struck by Balmung. Afterwards, she orders Sanson and Lancelot to kill the group, saying that Carmilla will join later. Jeanne Alter and Sanson later attack the town protected by Georgius while it is still being evacuated. She is amused that Marie defeated Sanson. Annoyed that Jeanne had already escaped with Georgius, she finds it ridiculous that gaining one Servant gave Jeanne hope. She asks Marie why she is trying to save the townspeople when she was beheaded by her own people. Marie replies that her death was inevitable because the people no longer needed her. She then asks Jeanne Alter who she is, but Jeanne Alter also tells her to shut up. Marie then activates the Crystal Palace and fights Jeanne Alter, ultimately losing. Back in Orleans, Jeanne Alter confirms that Marie has died. Gilles reveals that Sanson's mind died along with Marie, and says that he is now only fit to be a foot soldier. Jeanne Alter orders him to find Ritsuka's squad when D'Eon reveals that they are heading to Orleans. Jeanne Alter orders them to prepare for battle, and orders Gilles to gather the dragons and Servants. She states that the world will be destroyed if they win, and if they lose, the world will have long since disappeared. Since Chaldea and Jeanne still believe in this world, Jeanne Alter states that she will destroy them, not wanting them to restore the world according to her and Gilles' wishes.

She and her troops confront the group as they march on Orleans. She tells Jeanne that they are the same, but Jeanne firmly rejects this notion. Showing a horde of dragons, Jeanne Alter states that they will devour everything in France. Afterwards, the dragons will fight and devour each other in an endless war. General Gilles de Rais then arrives with his army and bombards the dragons with artillery. After her servants and Fafnir are killed, Gilles convinces Jeanne Alter to return to the castle. At the castle, Jeanne Alter orders Gilles to protect her while she summons a new Servant. She agrees to his proposal to summon King Arthur, though she doubts that the English knight will answer her summoning. She is surprised that Ritsuka's party arrived in the throne room faster than she expected, so she was unable to change the summoning. Jeanne asks her if she remembers her family, but Jeanne Alter cannot remember. Deciding that it doesn't matter, she summons the Shadow Servants to kill the party. After they are destroyed, she personally fights the group. She is defeated, but refuses to believe that she has lost because she holds the Grail. As she begins to die, Jeanne Alter tells Gilles that she has not yet destroyed France. Gilles consoles her by saying that he will destroy France in her place. Jeanne Alter then disappears, revealing that the Grail was her core.

Joan of Arc Alter

Joan of Arc Alter

The altered version of Jeanne d'Arc. Although designated as Alter, it does not mean that she is a different aspect of Jeanne d'Arc. A Jeanne of Vengeance that Gilles de Rais, the Marshal of the French Army who mourned Jeanne d'Arc's death, crafted for herself by means of the Holy Grail shortly after Jeanne's execution in 1431. As a Heroic Spirit, she is the exact opposite of what is proper. Jeanne, manifesting in the Avenger class. Since the proper Jeanne isn't a heroine, but a saint, the possibility of "summoning a different aspect of her" is zero. Because this dark Jeanne has Gilles de Rais's anger... the prejudices and desires for her to be like this... mixed in with her core parts, a "side" that should never happen ended up being brought to the surface. As such, one can think that this Jeanne d'Arc is composed primarily of Gilles de Rais's prejudices; an existence that encapsulates much of those prejudices and feelings.
