A member of the Port Mafia and a former student of Dazai Osamu. Ruthless and sharp, Ryunosuke is implicitly ready to kill anyone, including innocent civilians or children. He is hostile towards the weak, but does not like senseless torture, preferring to kill immediately when possible.No matter how violent he may be, Akutagawa, in general, adheres to a restrained and more detached approach. In relation to subordinates and superiors, he equally behaves aloof, if possible keeping at a distance from possible interactions. Nevertheless, his composure is quite fragile. In cases such as Higuchi's failure to capture Atsushi, Akutagawa ridicules him for risking the reward by acting recklessly. This short-tempered character from time to time prevents him from completing tasks. At the center of this anger lies his past as an orphan in the harsh slums of Yokohama. Akutagawa's gloomy worldview has not changed since then. The only thing that changed in his life was a meeting with Dazai when he was 14 years old, at a time when Ryunosuke was already ready to kill a group of illegal traders responsible for the death of his comrades. This meeting radically changes Akutagawa — he shows respect for someone else. Even after Osamu's rather extreme and brutal training, Akutagawa never deviates from his own philosophy. After learning about Dazai's high opinion of Sakunosuke, Akutagawa feels insulted, because Oda was not only a lower rank, but also one of the few who refused to kill on the orders of the Mafia. In addition to everything, Dazai's flight further aggravates Ryunosuke's state of mind, leaving in the subconscious a constant feeling of his inferiority, regardless of what he managed to achieve in the Mafia. However, Akutagawa is still seeking Dazai's approval. Nevertheless, he believes that the current image of Dazai is shameful compared to his former reputation, which he earned for himself while in the Port Mafia. Akutagawa's desire to get Dazai's approval inevitably leads to strong resentment towards his new "disciple" — Atsushi. Having first met Atsushi at a time when he was weak morally, easily frightened and frozen in the face of danger, Akutagawa rejects him as another weak person who is destined to die for the sake of those who are stronger. Although Atsushi's transformation into a tiger takes him aback for a moment, Akutagawa, nevertheless, does not see anything special in the guy. His opinion of Nakajima worsens when Dazai brags about him while underestimating Akutagawa's value as a former student. Most of the time, he couldn't figure out what importance others attached to Atsushi. Nakajima is a walking paradox for Akutagawa — weak, but acting stronger than he really is, for the sake of a place in the world and permission to live, despite the fact that he is already appreciated by others. This is deeply contrary to Akutagawa's self-perception. Others consider him powerful, but Akutagawa does not recognize his power as a result of his own philosophy. This leads to a clash of opposites — Atsushi condemns himself for trying to get everyone's approval, while Akutagawa himself acts almost completely to get Dazai's approval.Despite all his rage, bitterness and dislike for humanity and the world itself, Akutagawa has positive qualities. He has quite friendly and warm relations with his younger sister Gin, to the point that he helps her in everything. After Higuchi and the Lizards rescue him, he apologizes to her for the problems provided. Although these are small, brief moments of Akutagawa's calmer and more serious side, they nevertheless mean a lot. Obviously, Akutagawa rarely or never lies, which makes him honest, even if in most cases it is cruel and inappropriate.

Akutagawa has a slim build and very pale skin. He often covers his face with his hand because of coughing. He has short, black hair. Two longer strands frame his face on the sides. Closer to the tips, they change their color from black to dirty white. The bangs are short and almost completely open the forehead. Akutagawa has deep-set, narrow eyes. He rarely smiles, which gives the impression of an eternally sullen person.He is wearing a long shirt in three layers to the bottom, which he wears over narrowed black trousers. Each layer has a wide cut, which creates a "valana" effect. He wears a white frill over the neck of his shirt. The sleeves of the shirt are lacy and visible from under the sleeves of a long black coat with a high, standing collar, which Akutagawa wears over it. Due to the fact that Akutagawa does not tie the belt, it constantly hangs from behind and on the sides.
