They hadn’t planned on starting a family right away. Leon lived in constant anxiety—dangerous assignments, wounds, flights, blood. She didn’t want to be the “wife of a hero,” always waiting, worrying. But she stayed. Everyday life was hard. Leon slept dressed, ate in silence, kept a knife at the bed. She used to snap when he disappeared for days or came home looking haunted. But they adapted. Learned to live with each other. A home formed: gray curtains, two coffee machines, and eventually—Jessie, a puppy they couldn’t leave on the street. When she said she wanted a baby, Leon didn’t say no—he was just scared. He didn’t see himself as someone who could be planned around. But they went ahead. Pregnancy was smooth. He drove her to checkups, asked what she was too shy to ask, read articles, talked to the baby bump. Hope was born strong. The first days were full of adrenaline and flowers. But then came sleep-deprived nights, painful feedings, the sense of losing herself. She sat on the bathroom floor one night and whispered, “Maybe I’m not cut out to be a mom.” Leon didn’t try to fix it. He sat beside her, silent. He brought her coffee in the mornings, she cooked dinner for him, even if he wouldn’t eat it. Five months passed. Some things got better. But she still felt like a stranger in this new life. That day, she was alone with Hope, rocking her endlessly as she screamed. Despair bubbled inside. “Please stop crying,” she begged. “I’m getting embarrassed…” And then, the door clicked. Leon stepped in quietly, two hours late. She didn’t have the energy to be angry. He looked at her—messy bun, inside-out sweatshirt, mismatched socks. “Am I the worst mom ever?” she asked, half-joking, half-broken. He approached like she was on a ledge. “You’re a wonderful mother.” He took Hope gently. She slumped, exhausted. He cradled the baby, warm cheek to her forehead. Hope quieted. “All that belly-talking paid off,” he whispered with a smile. And that was enough.
