Personal information

Lady is a character in the 3D hack-and-slash action video games of the Devil May Cry saga. She is a human demon hunter who first appeared in the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, and later also in the spin-off manga of that same video game, the anime series Devil May Cry: The Animated Series, the video game Devil May Cry 4, and recently the "Special Edition" of the latter, where she makes her debut in the series as a playable character.

Appearance

Lady appears to be younger than Dante. In the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and in the anime series Devil May Cry: The Animated Series, she wears an outfit similar to that of a schoolgirl, which is later transformed into a formal outfit in the fourth video game, Devil May Cry 4, probably due to the amount of time that elapses between the two installments. She has long, dark hair that reaches her chin on both sides of her face and bangs that reach her eyebrows. From the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening to the video game Devil May Cry 4, the scars on Lady's face appear to have healed and her breasts have slightly increased in size. This is most likely also due to the amount of time that elapses between the two installments, allowing time for maturation and healing. Like her father, she has the genetic condition heterochromia, which causes each of her eyes to be a different color; as a result, her left eye is red and her right eye is teal (in some of her concept designs, Lady doesn't clearly show having two different colored eyes). In the video game Devil May Cry 4, she wears sunglasses to hide her eyes.

Personality

Lady is very fierce, tough, and strong enough to keep up with Dante. She is described as a "psychotic demon-hunting woman." However, when her father dies, Lady breaks down and cries, showing a more sentimental side. She might also be somewhat in love with Dante, as she seems to show a softer side when she's around him and gets a little jealous when she learns that Dante is good friends with Trish. Originally, she hated all demons, even half-demons, and wanted to exterminate them all. Her greatest weapon at that time was her belief that what she was doing was right. This led her to develop a moral fanaticism against demons, believing them to be remorseless monsters incapable of understanding things like love or family. This may have been the reason she initially didn't believe in the legend of Sparda; she may not have been able to accept the fact that a demon is responsible for both the continued existence of the world and humanity. However, over time and through her experiences with Dante, she confirms that Sparda truly existed and that humans and demons are equal in their capacity for both justice and depravity.

Weapons and Skills

Although still a regular human, Lady is an exceptionally skilled firearms expert and extremely acrobatic in hand-to-hand combat. Her most powerful weapon is the Kalina Ann, a customized missile launcher with an attached bayonet. She also carries a modified CZ-75 pistol with match-grade target sights, an extended barrel, and a compensator/weight barrel. She is a remarkably talented Devil Hunter, capable of easily killing most demons with her weapons. In the anime series Devil May Cry: The Animated Series, Lady demonstrated some skill in hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm Trish and go toe-to-toe in a physical fight for a short time despite the latter's superior physical abilities as a demon. She is portrayed as an avid billiards player. She is shown playing several times, the first time in the second volume of the manga based on the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and the second time during the anime series Devil May Cry: The Animated Series. She is a very skilled player, capable of strategically executing a difficult shot to win a bet. In the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and the series, it is shown that he owns a motorcycle. The first one is destroyed by Dante. The motorcycle he rides during the anime series is a red 1974 Ducati 750 Supersport.

Curiosities

Lady's original name, Mary, comes from the Virgin Mary, who called upon Saint Lucia and Beatrice to aid Dante during his sojourn through Hell in the poem *Divine Comedy* (14th century). As such, her chosen name of "Lady" is likely a reference to one of the Virgin's other names, 'Madonna' (Italian for 'Lady'). She is the only available human character in the Devil May Cry saga (Dante and Vergil are both half-demons, Trish and Lucia were artificially created, and Nero has demonic power and lineage running through his blood). In the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, the player can unlock an alternate costume for Lady. She only wears it if the player chooses to use special costumes. During the post-credits final sequence in the video game Devil May Cry 4, it can be seen that Dante is looking at a magazine with Lady's picture on it.
