Akatsuki was a group of shinobi that existed outside the usual system of hidden villages. Over the course of several decades, Akatsuki took different forms and was led by different individuals. Though each iteration is viewed as either subversives or criminals, all seek to make the world a better place through their own means. Each Akatsuki tended to have multiple lairs across the world, inaccessible either due to their remoteness or the various security measures that protected them.

Nagato- was a shinobi of Amegakure and descendant of the Uzumaki clan. Forming Akatsuki alongside his friends (and fellow war orphans) Yahiko and Konan, Nagato dreamed of bringing peace to the violent shinobi world. However, following Yahiko's death, Nagato adopted the alias of Pain and, along with Konan, began leading the Akatsuki — an organisation that would force the world into peace using any means necessary. When leading the Akatsuki, Nagato could also be possessed of a cold, wrathful side. He showed no hesitation in attempting to kill his former teacher Jiraiya, stating that all love for Jiraiya had long since died. When he attacked Konoha, Nagato demonstrated cold fury at Tsunade for defying his proclamations as to the justice of his attack on the Leaf.Nagato had pale white skin with straight red hair, a sign of his Uzumaki heritage. When he was very young, his eyes were covered by his hair, preventing his Rinnegan from being visible. When he started training to be a ninja he parted his hair so that only his right eye was covered. Linking with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path left a number of black receivers embedded in his back and caused his body to become very emaciated, limiting his mobility. For this reason he spent most of his adult life in a mechanical walker from which he controlled the Six Paths of Pain. He likewise did not personally wear any of the typical Akatsuki clothing, having his Paths wear it instead. After he performs Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique his hair turns white as a side-effect of the jutsu, and it remains that colour after Nagato is reincarnated, during which he is donned with a maroon long sleeved cloak. From absorbing some of the Eight-Tails' chakra, his hair became red again, as well as his frail body reverting to his fit self.Nagato's chakra was naturally resilient.Nagato was also an adept sensor, able to pinpoint the location of others across great distances, even penetrating beyond barriers erected for the express purpose

Nagato could rapidly move around a battlefield, closing the gap between himself and his opponents fast enough to force them to retreat.

Nagato's skill in so many types of ninjutsu was due in large part to his Rinnegan.Though he was not the eyes' original owner, being an Uzumaki allowed Nagato to wield both eyes without drawbacks even while still an untrained child, whereas Obito could barely handle a single eye despite his various modifications and in-depth knowledge of the dōjutsu. Ultimately, Nagato's skill was great enough to earn recognition as the "Third Six Paths" a title which he inherited after Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki and Madara Uchiha. The greatest advantage of the Rinnegan was that it gave Nagato access to all of the Six Paths Techniques: the gravitational powers of the Deva Path; the menagerie of summons available to the Animal Path; the limitless energy absorption of the Preta Path; the control over souls with the Human Path; the various mechanisations in the Asura Path; access to the King of Hell through the Naraka Path. Because of the limitations of his real body, Nagato had few chances to use any of these abilities directly. When the opportunity arose, though, he could shift between the different Paths seamlessly and instantly, performing the many abilities on a level he wasn't capable of when using them through others. The one branch of Six Paths Techniques that Nagato reserved for himself was that of the Outer Path. As the Outer Path, Nagato could summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path,[8] produce black receivers into which he can channel his chakra, and use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive the dead. Konan was a kunoichi from Amegakure and a founding member of the original Akatsuki. After Yahiko's death, she was partnered with Nagato, who had since taken control of Akatsuki, and was the only member to call him by his name. After Nagato's death, Konan defected from Akatsuki and became the de facto village head of Amegakure.Konan was smart, stoic, calm, and level-headed much like her partner, Nagato. She had the ability to read Pain's emotions without him

Konan had short, straight blue hair with a bun, grey eyes with lavender eye shadow, and a white labret piercing. Konan's eyelashes are shown to be a diagonal line at the bottom corner of her eyes, but in the anime, they are shown to be distinctive lines. She has worn a large light blue paper flower clipped on her bun since she was a child.

Her facial expression was usually neutral, though usually protested or looked worried when Nagato performed a technique that would debilitate him. She wore the Akatsuki cloak and her Akatsuki ring on her right middle finger, the kanji on it meaning "white". She also wore orange nail polish. Although she never removed her Akatsuki mantle, it was revealed that underneath it she wore a revealing navy blue robe, with a large hemline on the front, and exposed her arms, her back, the lateral part of her breast and her belly, with her navel being surrounded by four more piercings. It was also revealed that her headband is on her right hip; instead of the standard sandals and leg-warmers, she wore a pair of blue pants that also functioned as her shoes, with white high heels, inverting the organisation's standard colour scheme.Konan wore a black cloak with purple stockings and high heels, as well as a midsection guard, and an Ame forehead protector, that being the only time period Konan's been seen wearing one.Konan was undoubtedly a very powerful kunoichi. Her skills were held in high regard by her partner Pain, and has been highly praised by her former teacher, Jiraiya. She was also able to nearly kill Obito, with the latter only surviving due to using the kinjutsu Izanagi, something she did not anticipate in her countless simulations of their battle.Konan's nature transformations included Wind, Water, Earth, and Yang Release.Konan has had a natural talent for origami. She would go on to develop it into her fighting style, leading to the creation of the Dance of the Shikigami. This technique transforms her entire body and clothing into numerous sheets of paper that she can control, shape and change the colour of at will. She could create butterflies in order to gather information or travel long distances. She could harden her paper with chakra to make weapons such as spears, shuriken and chakram-like weapons.

She could restrain opponents by blanketing them in paper, and asphyxiate them if she wanted. She could make paper clones to fight in her place, and even hide explosive tags within them to catch an enemy off guard. Befitting her title as Angel, she was able to form paper wings on her back. This allowed her to fly (though she was able to hover without them), as well as fire paper from the wings.Despite being made of paper, Jiraiya's Fire Release: Flame Bullet barely damaged her when hit by it.

This was best seen in the existence of Akatsuki, its wildly-differing members working together because they believed the organisation would further their own ends; in actuality, they were mere tools that Obito used.Despite how different his adult personality seemed, it was at its basest level very much the same as the person he was as a child. Obito viewed his actions as a station beyond Hokage; where the Hokage does what is best for the village, Obito felt he did what was best for the world.Obito wore a variety of different masks over the years to hide his identity when he interacted with others. During the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack on Konoha and for several years following he wore a mask with a black flame (coloured orange and yellow at different times in the anime, while being closer to grey in the Naruto: Colour Edition). With his Sharingan he could perform various genjutsu on targets he had eye contact with, either to create illusions, acquire information,or control their actions.Although he was seen controlling six tailed beasts with his Sharingan, his control with multiple targets was not as complete as it is with one and it is possible for some to break free from his control.Obito awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan after witnessing Rin's death; the Sharingan he gave to Kakashi awakened its Mangekyō at the same time. Their Mangekyō's design was three stretched triangles evenly spaced around the pupil that each curve at the top around the eye to form a circle, making it similar to a pinwheel. Obito did not appear to suffer any adverse effects from using his Mangekyō Sharingan, such as the deteriorating eyesight or exhaustion experienced by others.Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan allowed him to perform Kamui, a space–time ninjutsu with greater versatility than Minato's.Kamui served as a gateway to another dimensional space, which he can move all or parts of his body between at will. This granted Obito two distinct abilities: teleportation and what is best described

Itachi Uchiha was a shinobi of Konohagakure's Uchiha clan who served as an Anbu Captain. He later became an international criminal after murdering his entire clan, sparing only his younger brother, Sasuke. He afterwards joined the international criminal organisation known as Akatsuki, whose activity brought him into frequent conflict with Konoha and its ninja — including Sasuke who sought to avenge their clan by killing Itachi.

His assigned partner is Kisame Hoshigaki, who possessed incredible self-control over his emotions, always displaying a personality devoid of them. He possessed no arrogance, and was shown to be very wise, even Tobi acknowledged this. He was very strong and attentive to any situation that happened, as he was rarely surprised. He also displayed great intuition, and Itachi did not enjoy violence or combat, preferring to avoid battle or, if this was not possible, to end it as soon as possible. Itachi got along with his partner, Kisame, much better than most other members of Akatsuki. Kisame seemed to have a deep loyalty to Itachi, immediately doing as he was instructed and always looking out for his well-being. The two would often have deep conversations in which they questioned the true nature of people. Itachi treated all of his fellow Akatsuki members with the same respectful personality, despite his politeness, he rarely turned to the other members. Despite being a cold person, he is really a kind and big-hearted person who looks out for the common good.he wore the standard Akatsuki cloak and a slashed Konoha forehead protector to symbolise his broken ties with the village. The cloak's high collar would obscure his ponytail. He would sometimes unbutton his cloak to mid-chest and rest his left arm there, rather than in the sleeve. Under his cloak he wore clothes similar to the rest of Akatsuki: mesh armour with navy accents under an identical T-shirt with a simple white belt around the waist and dark blue pants. On his right ring finger was his Akatsuki ring, which was red and bore the kanji for "vermilion". He wore light blue nail polish on his fingers and toes and a necklace that had three silver rings with red gems inside them.Itachi could summon crows, which he would typically call forth in flocks to swarm opponents and distract them. He even integrated crows into clones of himself to draw opponents' attention. He likewise could create shadow clones

Having pacifist ideals, Itachi specialised in genjutsu, which often involved crows. Itachi could use genjutsu to share information or psychologically disable opponents, letting him end the fight instantly. Regarded as one of Konohagakure's best users, rivalling Shisui himself, as even without the aid of his Sharingan, his illusions had remarkable potency and were able to seamlessly affect his targets without them realising it - despite the target being on guard.

Itachi awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan after witnessing Shisui's suicide. Its design was three spiralling curves around the pupil. With his right eye he could use Amaterasu, igniting whatever he looked at with black flames that would burn anything, including fire itself, and at will extinguish Amaterasu. With either eye, he could use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that trapped opponents' minds in an illusory world of his own design — capable of altering their perception of matter, space, gravity, and even time. Itachi could cast sophisticated and elaborate illusions, forcing the target to experience an entire lifetime in an instant. Likewise, while genjutsu normally cannot kill, with Tsukuyomi Itachi could cause enough mental damage to kill the victim if he wanted to.Even survivors have shown to be hospitalized for extended periods of time.Having awakened the Mangekyō in both his eyes, Itachi could also use Susanoo. With its simplest manifestations, he could produce extra arms or bones to improve his options in a fight. When used in full, Itachi was surrounded by a spectral warrior that would protect him from damage. In addition to the chakra swords and Yasaka Magatama common to all Susanoo, Itachi's Susanoo wielded the Sword of Totsuka – an ethereal sword with the ability to seal any person it pierced into its gourd—hilt – and the Yata Mirror – a shield that was said to reflect any attack by changing its chakra nature to counterbalance an attack. The simultaneous use of both weapons made Itachi's Susanoo essentially invincible. As a member of the Akatsuki, he was teamed up with Itachi Uchiha. Despite initially greeting each other with hostility, they became good comrades who shared a common bond of having betrayed the people closest to them. Kisame loved to fight. However, he was usually unable to finish their battles, with Itachi being his partner who only fought when necessary. Kisame did not hesitate to maim his opponents. He was very loyal to Itachi

Kisame was a very tall, muscular shinobi, and was the tallest member in Akatsuki. He had a distinctive shark-like appearance, complete with pale, green skin in the manga,[14] (depicted as blue-grey in the anime). He has small, round, white eyes, 3 sets of curved facial markings under his eyes, gills on his shoulders,[15] and sharp triangular teeth, the latter of which is a shared trait amongst most of the other members of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist.

He also styled his blue hair in the form of a shark fin.As a member of Akatsuki, he also wore dark-purple nail polish. During his time as a Kirigakure shinobi, he sported the standard outfit of the village, complete with a flak jacket and a forehead protector. Later, he donned what appears to be the standard attire of the Seven Swordsmen which consists of: a dark sleeveless shirt paired with matching pants, provided with a waist guard, and striped arm and leg-warmers typical of his village. He also switched to a modified version of Kirigakure's forehead protector, which covered his ears as well. After defecting from the village, he donned the typical cloak members of Akatsuki wore, and underneath it he was bare-chested. He also wore a brown sash across the front and back of his cloak to hold Samehada in place. His forehead protector was slashed across the symbol, signifying he was no longer affiliated with Kirigakure. He wore his Akatsuki ring on his left ring finger, bearing the kanji for "south" which was yellow in colour.Originally, Kisame wielded a normal katana, with which he was proficient enough to kill all of his comrades on one mission. After slaying his master with the said katana, Kisame's signature weapon became Samehada, a sentient, scale-covered sword, that shaves flesh instead of cutting it. Samehada is also capable of detecting and absorbing chakra. However, it seems to be unable to automatically absorb ambient chakra, judging by the fact that all instances in which it has used the ability have either been when the opponent had a visible aura around them or when direct physical contact had already been established.[15][26] When Samehada absorbs chakra, its scales grow and it slowly begins to unwrap itself, revealing a mouth with several rows of shark-like teeth.Kisame was a master of Water Release techniques

Zetsu is a character that appears to be bipolar, as he talks to himself, easily distinguishable by two huge, Venus Flytrap-like plant extensions covering his head and shoulders. These extensions can cover the rest of his body, which they do whenever he is hiding. When his extensions are open and his head is visible, it is revealed that Zetsu has two differently colored halves to his body: the right side is completely black and the left side is white, as well as two circle-like, yellow eyes.

To go with this, Zetsu appears to have a split personality. The two halves also converse with each other, and occasionally, they will argue with each other, though they also seem to communicate mentally. Kakuzu was a greedy, miserly person, not getting involved in anything often unless he gained something. He even commented that money was the only reliable thing in the world. Because of this, he referred to himself as the "Akatsuki treasurer". Given his friendship with Ginji, his bounty manager, he apparently collected bounties quite frequently to earn money and did so (or at least attempted to) during his missions on several occasions. The frequency of neglecting missions and devotion to money were major points of contention between Hidan and Kakuzu. He also seemed to respect his adversaries. Of all the members of Akatsuki, Hidan and Kakuzu displayed a rivalry towards each other, as neither of them were very fond of the other's interests. Hidan had shown much displeasure with Kakuzu's greed and his occasional habit of doing or saying things he considered blasphemous, such as attacking a temple and killing the head monk for a reward. In turn, Kakuzu disliked Hidan's religion, believing the rituals to be a waste of time. Kakuzu was also quite impatient with Hidan's elaborate speeches and his impetuosity in battle. The only reason Kakuzu puts up with Hidan was because he can't get rid of him. Due to his violent temper, he would often kill everyone near him when he was enraged. Hidan, therefore, was the perfect partner for Kakuzu, due to Hidan's immortality. Despite his obsessive personality and violent rage, Kakuzu was far more cautious than his partner and was not as arrogant. Kakuzu apparently views a fight as a game of chess, as in the Fourth Shinobi World War he mentions that they have lost the rook and the bishop, referring to Ginkaku and Kinkaku, Kakuzu sees himself as the king (possibly because he can summon other pieces - their hearts - and because of his int

Hidan was a very foul-mouthed and disrespectful young man; he frequently used profanity and complained about both allies and opponents, despite being a "very religious" person. He rarely used honorifics when speaking, and even then, usually as a form of sarcasm: for example, calling Deidara "Deidara-chan". [11] He was the only member of Akatsuki who did not respect their leader Pain, and openly stated his willingness to kill him around others.

He openly despised his comrade, Kakuzu, for his habits of profanity, greed, and Kakuzu's frequent ridicule of Hidan's religion and battle style. According to his claim, despite being close to Kakuzu in physical proximity, Hidan would never consider him a "neighbor" (in the Jashinist definition, someone who is emotionally close), as he openly despised Kakuzu. Despite this, whenever Hidan was in the mood to kill, the two would work together seamlessly in battle, it can be inferred that he cared somewhat for his partner's well-being.Hidan has medium-length grey hair that was slicked back and distinctive purple eyes. Before joining the Akatsuki, he wore no shirt, had bandages wrapped around his stomach, wore maroon pants with long, black shinobi sandals (each bearing an attached zipper attached). After joining the Akatsuki, he remained with no shirt, but bears the organisation's cloak, which he kept slightly opened, revealing his Yugakure forehead protector around his neck and Jashin amulet; his forehead protector bore a slash across the village symbol, signifying he severed ties with it. He changes his bottoms to grey pants with matching shinobi sandals. He also wore dark green nail polish and his orange Akatsuki ring on his left index finger, which bears the kanji for "three" (三, san). When not fighting, he was always seen with his Triple-Bladed Scythe on his back. After his fight with Asuma, Hidan lost part of his left ear and Kakuzu stitched his neck after he was briefly decapitated. In the Power arc, upon being recreated, Hidan initially lacked clothing, but later wore a black cloak with red lining, similar to the one worn by Kabuto and the reincarnated Akatsuki members at the time. Rather than the purple eyes of his original self, the recreated Hidan possessed eyes with dark grey sclera and white, snake-like irides. When Kabuto used a talisman to take full control of Hidan, his eyes instead had black sclera and white, pupil-less irides.

Above all else, Orochimaru looked out only for himself. He grew bored when there was no conflict or violence in the world. Although there were a number of followers who would do anything for him, Orochimaru treated them as mere pawns. He did not hesitate to send them to their deaths for his own personal gain, and only found remorse in their loss if they were unable to properly complete a task. Above all else, Orochimaru looked out only for himself.

He was bored when there was no conflict or violence in the world. Although there were a number of followers who would do anything for him, Orochimaru treated them as mere pawns. He did not hesitate to send them to their deaths for his own personal gain, and only found remorse in their loss if they were unable to properly complete a task.Orochimaru, a legendary Sannin from the Leaf Village, was once one of its most powerful and skilled ninjas. However, his ideology changed after the Second Great Ninja War. He became obsessed with becoming immortal and gaining ultimate power, leading him to study all jutsu and conduct various experiments and illegal activities. Orochimaru’s thirst for knowledge and power eventually turned him into a rogue ninja, and he joined the Akatsuki. Known for his snake-like appearance and sinister personality, Orochimaru’s actions and ambitions have made him one of the most dangerous and feared figures in the ninja world.Orochimaru's most conspicuous characteristic is his snake-like appearance: he has very pale skin, golden eyes with slitted pupils, purple markings around his eyes and fang-like teeth. He also has pronounced cheekbones and straight waist-length black hair with some locks covering and framing his face or to his shoulders. The various bodies he takes over have each been modified to resemble his original form, except for the height differences. In Naruto Gaiden, Orochimaru's facial features soften and somewhat androgynous with his eye markings becoming black. He also wears his hair in a ponytail, allowing two locks to frame the sides of his face. In the manga, his skin-tone becomes noticeably fairer in complexion.Orochimaru usually wears plain grey garbs with a black polo and pants underneath, a thick purple rope belt tied in a large knot behind his back, blue tomoe-shaped earrings, and shinobi sandals with bandages around his calves. He is seen wearing a kimono with different colours on several occasions

Deidara was easily angered and enraged, was very hot-headed and often tended to overreact to certain things. Deidara's most distinctive trait was his love for art, respecting any of its forms, even if it disagreed with his own. Deidara also had a habit of ending his sentences with nasal grunts such as (...うん, ...des), translated as "yeah" or "hm". He referred to his explosive ninjutsu as art, believing that each bomb he made was a significant accomplishment.

He referred to his style as "superflat" (in reference to certain types of art), and stated that pop (another art style) is dead. One of Deidara's catchphrases, "Art is an explosion!" Deidara was very proud of his art, to the point that he would not accept that anything beat him, at least when he knew he was still capable of fighting. However, he was intelligent enough to recognize stronger opponents. He also deeply despised Itachi and the Sharingan, believing it to be inartistic, and an insult to his clay explosion, and according to Deidara, those eyes did not admire his art and looked down on him, as a result of this, he became quite analytical in managing to counter all types of Genjutsu. Deidara referred to his partner Sasori as Master Sasori (サソリの旦那, Sasori no Danna), out of respect for him as a artist. He also admitted, despite being very proud, that Sasori was more powerful than him. Despite this, Deidara was not afraid of his partner, far from it, he liked to constantly provoke him and they often fought over the nature of true art. This reflected their individual natures (Deidara made clay sculptures that exploded; Sasori made human puppets of indeterminate length). Deidara outwardly seemed to respect Sasori's beliefs, whom he seemed to appreciate.Deidara had slanted blue eyes with thick black lines under them (reminiscing eyeliner) and long golden-blond hair which he wore drawn into a half ponytail with the rest hanging down freely. The bang hanging over his left eye is what concealed his eye scope signifying that he was a long-range fighter, but as shown in his fight with Sasuke, it was not permanently attached to his face. After casting the Iwagakure Kinjutsu on himself, he developed a mouth on both of his palms, and on the left side of his chest he had a large, stitched-up mouth. He used this kinjutsu to supplement his Explosive Release to his clay.

He also scratched a line across his forehead protector to signify his severed ties with Iwagakure, a common practice of Akatsuki members

Because of a certain turn of events, Deidara suffered damage to his arms. Deidara had his left arm crushed by Gaara's sand, and the elbow of his right arm was blown into another dimension by Kakashi's Kamui. Deidara had his arms restored by having Kakuzu sew what was left of his arms with what appears to be a transplanted arm. His transplant was dark brown and had several wrinkles on it. Sasori a cold and indifferent person. This led him to have little regard for human life, going so far as to state that he would feel nothing if Chiyo were to die, having claimed that his heart had become a puppet of his body: devoid of any emotions whatsoever. Despite his cruelty, Sasori had also been shown to possess a very pragmatic outlook on life, rarely becoming bothered by any obstacles thrown his way. He also rarely showed any outward emotion, and even these instances were short-lived. He was shown to be someone who was arrogant, graceful, cruel, ambitious, intelligent, a tactical genius, and powerful. Sasori was also known for his impatience, as he repeatedly stated that he did not want to wait or keep others waiting, which was quite ironic as he had all the time in the world due to his undying puppet body. Sasori's ambition was to become the perfect work of art himself by turning his own body into another of his puppets and taking pride in being oblivious to human limitations. Sasori and his second partner in Akatsuki, Deidara, had opposing opinions on art, and frequently argued over their views. Deidara held the view that art was something transient that fades away quickly, while Sasori believed that works of art were wonderful things that last forever. This reflected their individual natures: Deidara made clay sculptures that explode, while Sasori created long-lasting puppets of human beings. However, Deidara outwardly seemed to respect Sasori's beliefs, though Sasori never respected Deidara's; nevertheless, Sasori always respected him as a fellow student and treated him

Sasori had wide greyish brown eyes which he inherited from his mother, and short, mousy red hair which he inherited from his father.

After joining the Akasuki and converting himself into a puppet in the likeness of his original body, Sasori's hair became slightly more messy, and wore his Akatsuki robe along with a purple Akatsuki ring on his left thumb that bears the kanji for "jewel" or "sphere" (玉, gyoku). He also wore teal nail polish on his fingernails. Even though Sasori still possessed his Sunagakure forehead protector that was slashed out in the middle, he kept it on his person instead of wearing it. Sasori's puppet body consisted of a pair of spinning claws attached to his lower back, a holder for four scrolls on his back, a stinger in the empty and open stomach cavity, a compartment in his right chest, and a 'core of living flesh' (生身の核, namami no kaku) in the left which had the kanji for "scorpion" (蠍, sasori) painted on it. In his exposed state, Sasori's eyes would also be wide open in a maniacal way, as opposed to his normal calm looking eyes.
