Hanma is very tall for his age. He has black hair with a bleached streak in the middle. His hair is completely shaved, with the main tuft styled upwards. A long gold earring adorns his left ear. The kanji for "Crime" and "Punishment" are tattooed on his left and right arms respectively. He is usually seen in his current gang uniform. In his first appearance, Hanma is dressed in a simple white oversized shirt, cropped black skinny jeans, and sandals.

Hanma's personality can be described as "an experienced thug" at first glance. However, he is a rather cunning yet naive young man. He believes that image is an integral part of attracting attention and possibly "respect". His only goal in life is to find fun, resorting to street violence as a means of relieving himself from extreme boredom. However, he slowly sinks into apathy as he continues to win fight after fight without much resistance. It is for this reason that Hanma eventually allies himself with Kisaki and cares little whether the latter exploits him, as he finds joy in following his cruel plans. As long as he can entertain himself, the guy cares little about the consequences or collateral damage his actions cause. This thinking even extends to himself, as this man cares very little about the value of his own life. Hanma is also cruel, readily enjoying violence and actively participating in Kisaki's plans. Even enjoying the chaos caused by their crimes. Sometimes reacting with euphoria at the fact that he and Tetta are in the middle of a battle, seeing people suffer.

Draken named him "Zombie" for this very reason, as it took Draken a surprising amount of hits to eventually defeat Hanma. He was able to block Mikey's signature punch and was barely hurt by the blow, and was able to stop Mikey. In a later battle, he lost to Mikey purely due to his carelessness.
