Group Stage Format

The Copa América is a tournament in which (not all) countries from the American continent participate, a total of 16 countries. The CONMEBOL (the confederation that organizes the Copa América) selects a host country to hold the tournament. The Group Stage format is divided into 4 groups with 4 teams each, where each team plays 3 matches against the others in its group. The top 2 teams with the most points in their groups will advance to the Knockout Stage of the Copa América.

Playoff Format

The Knockout Stage is the second step and challenge after the Group Stage; here, the matchups are determined based on the Group Stage standings. (Example: Uruguay finishes first in Group B, and faces Chile, who finished second in Group A). Complex example: 1st place Group A vs. 2nd place Group B. 2nd place Group A vs. 1st place Group B. 1st place Group C vs. 2nd place Group D. 2nd place Group D vs. 1st place Group C. After that, single-match encounters will be held in the host country's stadiums. There will be no extra time; if the two countries draw, a penalty shootout will immediately follow until one team wins and advances to the next phase. Extra time will be played in the final, meaning 30 more minutes will be played before a penalty shootout determines the winner of the trophy.

Classification Format for Central and North America

The Copa América is mostly organized in the south of the continent, which is also where the CONMEBOL conference is based. Therefore, unless a country from Central or North America is chosen as a host to ensure direct communication, a qualifying tournament format is selected. Only 6 countries will be able to qualify for the next edition of the Copa América (5 if the country is the host of the next edition).
