The Afton family was a British-American family, presumably from Utah, that played an influential role in the history of Fazbear Entertainment and managed its related sister company, Afton Robotics. Throughout their family history, the Aftons impacted Fredbear's Family Diner, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, Circus Baby's Pizza World, Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rentals, and Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place, usually as businessmen or security guards. For many decades, the family was incredibly dysfunctional. The family patriarch, William Afton, was a serial killer and largely absent from the lives of his children. He neglected his younger son, the Crying Child, and allowed his Older Brother named Michael Afton to bully and relentlessly torment him, inevitably resulting in the former's alleged death in the Bite of '83. William also caused the death of his daughter, Elizabeth Afton, by designing the Funtime animatronics to lure and kill children—these animatronics then using their programming to kill Elizabeth. The family matriarch's role is unknown. Many decades later, Michael Afton and William Afton were reunited at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. The latter attempted to kill his son, although was ultimately unsuccessful. In the end, both of them were burned alive by Henry Emily, William's former business partner.

William Afton was born, presumably in Utah, around the 1930s-1950s. At some point he met and married a woman. William and his wife had two sons, one of which they named Michael.

William Afton met a man named Henry Emily and together the two co-founded Fazbear Entertainment. Additionally, William ran a sister company known as Afton Robotics. Together, the two invented springlock animatronics and opened Fredbear's Family Diner in New Harmony, Utah in the late 70s. The diner featured two springlock animatronics, Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, alongside the Security Puppet. The diner became fairly popular and was considered an economic success, sparking a toy line and a 1983 television series known as Fredbear and Friends. At one point, however, the Crying Child recently started to develop a very intense fear of the animatronics. In addition, the Older Brother loved to terrorize his younger sibling by jumpscaring him with a Foxy mask. William's solution to the problem was to install a camera system in his underground bunker where he spied on his children. Eventually, two major incidents culminated in the collapse of Fredbear's Family Diner. In 1983, William killed Charlotte Emily, the daughter of his business partner Henry, outside of Fredbear's Family Diner. The Older Brother forcefully brought the Crying Child to Fredbear's Family Diner for the latter's birthday party, knowing he was extremely terrified of the animatronics. The Older Brother and his friends carried the young boy towards the Animatronics, with the situation eventually escalating to the Older Brother claiming he wanted to "give Fredbear a kiss." Fredbear's mouth crushed down on the Child's neck and head, severely injuring him. This incident became known as the Bite of '83. His Fredbear plush promised to put him back together, though whether he succeeded or not is unconfirmed. Later, William Afton and his wife got a daughter, whom they named Elizabeth. Due to his ignorance, William proved to be an absent father and husband, resulting in Mrs. Afton leaving the picture, presumably by divorce.

Despite the fall of Fredbear's, a sister location called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza became an even bigger success. This pizzeria was far larger and starred Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. In 1985, William kidnapped and murdered five children at the pizzeria. His first victim, Susie, was stuffed inside of Chica. The second victim, Fritz, was stuffed into Foxy. The third victim, Gabriel, was stuffed inside of Freddy. The fourth victim, Jeremy, was stuffed into Bonnie. Finally, Cassidy was murdered and stuffed into Golden Freddy. With the help of the Puppet, the five children found new life and possessed the animatronics they were stuffed inside of. This string of murders became known as the Missing Children's Incident. While William was suspected and arrested, he got away with the crime because the bodies were never found. Freddy's ultimately closed as a result. In 1987, a new Freddy Fazbear's Pizza is opened. William murders another set of innocent children, who possess the new Toy models, and leaves; It's also theorized that he was the first security guard, using a different name. Shortly afterwards, a night guard named Jeremy Fitzgerald applies for the night guard position in the location, who after the first week on the job, gets moved over to day shift, allowing a third night guard, Fritz Smith, to take his place. Unfortunately, the Bite of '87 occurs, resulting in the pizzeria being closed down yet again.

The third Freddy Fazbear's Pizza is set to close in 1993 after being open for five years from the year 1988. One of William's sons, Michael Afton, applies for the night guard job under the alias of "Mike Schmidt" , in which he claims to be here for free pizza, although it's implied he may have other intentions. He worked from the 8th to the 14th of November 1993. On the first night of the job, Mike listened to the recordings made by Phone Guy, giving him advice on the night shift, while fending off the animatronics. Mike suffered hallucinations, caused by all the paranormal activity going on around him, however, on Night 4, he hears Phone Guy die, and on Night 5, a disturbing message is left. He also spent time writing in his security logbook, which he dubbed the Survival Logbook. After Night 6, he was called "Employee of the month", due to his dedication, and praised for overtime. On Night 7, however, Mike tampered with the AI of the animatronics, and was subsequently fired as well as for other reasons included unprofessionalism, and odor.

Sometime after a successful Freddy Fazbear's Pizza location closed down, William built Circus Baby's Pizza World, now with robots being made to kidnap and kill children. However, the second death in the family occurred when Elizabeth got too close to one of the robots, Circus Baby, which resulted in her getting pulled into the robot's stomach, crushing her to death. William cancels the grand opening of the location and covers the incident up by saying it was due to gas leaks. He then opens Circus Baby's Entertainment & Rental, an underground location where he rents out the Funtime animatronics to private parties while also experimenting on kidnapped children. Sometime afterwards, William goes to the abandoned location and destroys the four main animatronics: somewhere around this time, he also tasks Michael with going to Circus Baby's to "help" Elizabeth, who is now haunting Baby. After destroying the animatronics, the vengeful spirits that haunted the robots go after their killer. Afton, in a blind panic, goes to the Safe Room and eventually hides into the Spring Bonnie suit, now withered. Due to the conditions of the suit, the spring locks malfunction and kill William, tearing him apart and killing him slowly.

When Mike goes to Baby's, HandUnit and his sister helps him survive against the other animatronics. On the fifth day, every robot in the location congeal into Ennard. Baby, now controlling the amalgamation of machines, reveals that she desperately wants to escape with her friends, and scoops Mike using the Scooper, killing him. With the giant hole in Mike's body, Ennard replaces his insides with itself, escaping the location. After a week, they were forced to escape Michael's body and go into the sewers because Michael's body was rotting. Michael survives because of the Remnant injected into him from the Scooper, and swears to find his father from then on.

Thirty years later, William, now known as Springtrap, is revealed to have survived and been taken to Fazbear's Fright, a horror attraction that serves as a homage to the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. There, he roams the attraction, attempts to kill the place's night guard for the week, and escapes after it's set on fire. He eventually goes through some sort of change, implicitly repairing himself with another Spring Bonnie suit, and becomes Scraptrap. He is then lured into another Freddy Fazbear's location, this time named Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. A day after he was salvaged by his own son, Michael, he reunites with his daughter, now known as Scrap Baby, who became this way after she was ejected out of Ennard by Funtime Freddy due to being too controlling. At the end of the week, as Scrap Baby is about to kill Michael, Henry interrupts her. Henry explains that the entire location is a trap, and sets the pizzeria on fire. The Aftons, alongside the Emilys, had their bodies destroyed in the fire, and their souls were set free. However, William Afton was kept alive by the Vengeful Spirit of Golden Freddy to torture him in his nightmares for eternity. As of now, both of their fates are unknown.
