Michael Afton is a security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and a night technician at Baby's Rent-A-Bar, as well as the son of serial killer William Afton.

Throughout the franchise, he works as a security guard, a technician, and a pizzeria owner, always as the game's protagonist. His goal is to right his father's wrongs, find his sister, and "put her back together."

In the early 90s, Mike works as a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. He survives five nights and two extra shifts before he is fired for interfering with the animatronics.

As an adult, in Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, he goes to work at Circus Baby's Entertainment & Rental at the request of his father to bring back his sister, Elizabeth. He successfully completes the tasks until the fifth night, where a combination of Baby, Funtime Freddy, Funtime Foxy, and Ballora named Ennard lures Michael into the Scoop Room and uses the Scoop to kill him, extracting his entrails. Ennard, in Michael's body, walks among people until the body decomposes to an unnatural state and when Michael's death becomes obvious to those around him. Ennard then leaves Michael's body and disappears into the sewers, but Michael, contrary to nature, rises from the dead and remains physically alive.
