Merlin

Merlin (also called Emrys) is the hero and protagonist of the series. He is a warlock, the only son of Hunith and Balinor, the ward and apprentice of Gaius, and the best friend and manservant of the late King Arthur. He is also the last Dragonlord in existence and a creature of the Old Religion. After leaving his childhood home for Camelot, Merlin became the manservant of Prince Arthur. From then on, Merlin began to protect and guide Arthur on his journey to the throne; according to the Great Dragon, it was his destiny to do so. Merlin was also destined to become the greatest and most powerful sorcerer to ever live, and to use his powers to help Arthur reunite the kingdom of Albion by uniting the Old Ways with the new. Merlin was born to Hunith and Balinor in Ealdor, a small outlying village in Cenred's Kingdom. Near the end of the Great Purge, Gaius had helped Balinor, a Dragonlord, escape the slaughter of his people and arranged for him to stay with Hunith. The two fell in love, but Uther eventually discovered Balinor's whereabouts and sent men to arrest him. Balinor was forced to flee Ealdor and leave Hunith behind, unaware that she was pregnant with his child (The Last Dragonlord). Unlike most sorcerers, Merlin was born with the ability to use magic. According to the Great Dragon, Merlin's birth had been prophesied by many cultures. The Druids, for example, referred to him as "Emrys" (The Beginning of the End). Life could be difficult in a village as small and isolated as Ealdor. Food was scarce and everyone was expected to pitch in and help with the harvest. Merlin had one friend growing up, William, who knew about his magic. At some point in their childhood, he used his magic to fell a tree, a stunt which nearly flattened Old Man Simmons (The Moment of Truth). When Merlin was in his late teens, Hunith grew worried by how at odds he was with the people of Ealdor and decided to send him to live with Gaius in Camelot. arthur

King Arthur Pendragon of Camelot was the son and heir of Uther Pendragon and the only child of Ygraine de Bois. He was the husband of Queen Guinevere, brother-in-law to Sir Elyan, son-in-law to Tom the blacksmith, the paternal half-brother of Morgana, the nephew of Tristan de Bois and Agravaine de Bois. Arthur's best friend was the greatest warlock and sorcerer ever, Merlin, his servant. According to the prophecies of Kilgharrah, Arthur was destined to unite the land of Albion. As a young prince, Arthur was spoiled, narrow-minded, and arrogant, though good-hearted; as time passed, he eventually matured and became best friends with his manservant, Merlin. This was partially due to his dislike of the way his father ruled, and also because of the influence Merlin had on him. Arthur tended to have negative opinions about Uther’s harsher policies, particularly his aversion to magic, but during his reign he kept his father’s decree banning magical practice due to his war with Morgana. Arthur’s great conviction is in peace and justice, and during his reign he revived the Round Table and managed to establish peace between the five kingdoms for the first time in centuries. Arthur died at the hands of Mordred by the shores of Avalon, but, Kilgharrah claimed that, as the Once and Future King, he is destined to one day rise again.

gaius

Gaius[2] is the Court Physician of Camelot and has been for the last twenty-seven to twenty-nine years, since the birth of Arthur Pendragon. Additionally, he has a great knowledge of sorcery and the legends associated with it, having studied and practised it for many years before the Great Purge. He is Merlin’s mentor and friend, and one of the few people who know of his magical abilities.

guinevere

Queen Guinevere Pendragon, better known as Gwen, is the widow of Arthur Pendragon, one of the best friends of Merlin, the younger sister of the late Sir Elyan, the only daughter and the youngest child of the late Tom (The Blacksmith), and the sister-in-law and a former best friend of the late Morgana Pendragon. Gwen worked as Morgana's maid for many years before marrying Arthur, and inherited the throne after his demise. It is assumed that Gwen ruled Camelot as Queen Regnant until the day she died. With Arthur dying childless, Gwen is his sole heir and therefore it can be assumed the Pendragon line of reign comes to an end after Guinevere’s death.

morgana

Morgana Pendragon was the illegitimate daughter of Uther Pendragon, the second daughter and the youngest child of Vivienne, the paternal half-sister of Arthur, the younger maternal half-sister of Morgause and the adopted daughter of Gorlois. Originally a kind-hearted individual, Morgana changed entirely, becoming evil after being corrupted by Morgause and being betrayed by her former-friend, Merlin. She subsequently turned against her family and friends, even helping to cause the death of her own father; she was ruthlessly determined to take over Camelot and allowed nothing to stand in her way. Morgana has been shown to have formed a bond with Mordred, whom Kilgharrah foresaw would kill Arthur, before Mordred betrayed her to Arthur, and she also formed a close bond with the young dragon, Aithusa, who saved her life. Soon after the Battle of Camlann, and Mordred's death, Morgana was killed by her nemesis Merlin with Excalibur.

uther

King Uther Pendragon was the King of Camelot and the father of Arthur and Morgana Pendragon. He was seen as an immutable ruler, with his laws upholding duty and tradition while defying the use of magic. All magic users and people suspected of using magic were killed under Uther's command. It was his hatred of magic and severe punishment of those who used it that ultimately caused Morgana to turn against him. Her subsequent betrayal proved to be an emotional blow that Uther never overcame, leaving him a broken man in the final stretch of his reign. He later died at her hand after having been mortally wounded by an assassin, with Merlin's healing spell backfired by Morgana's enchantment. After his death, he became the father-in-law of Arthur's wife, Gwen. Uther retained his prejudices after death and disliked many of the reforms and decisions Arthur made during his reign, including his marriage. When Uther’s soul escaped from the afterlife, he acted upon his beliefs by haunting Camelot and attempting to murder Guinevere and Percival in the process, before subsequently being expunged by Arthur himself, telling his late father that it was his turn to be king.

Leon

Sir Leon was a loyal and highly skilled Knight of Camelot who served under both Uther and Arthur Pendragon. He was made a Knight of the Round Table after joining Arthur's rebellion during the Fall of Camelot, and soon became Arthur's second-in-command and one of his most trusted advisors.

gwaine

Gwaine was a Knight of the Round Table and close friend of Merlin. Born the son of a knight in Caerleon's kingdom, he rejected his family's noble heritage after the King refused to help them after his father's death. He wandered Albion as a vagabond until the Fall of Camelot, during which he pledged his allegiance to Arthur Pendragon and became a Knight of Camelot. Gwaine served as a Knight for at least four years, during which he kept his noble blood a secret from his peers. He was killed by Morgana Pendragon in the aftermath of the Battle of Camlann.

mordred

Mordred was a druid who formed a close bond with Morgana when she, Arthur and Merlin saved his life as a young boy. Mordred is the first person to call Merlin by his druid name "Emrys". When Kilgharrah foresaw that Mordred would be responsible for the death of Arthur Pendragon, the dragon warned Merlin not to help the young druid but he could not allow the boy to die and helped Arthur rescue Mordred. Later as a young man, Mordred had to choose between Arthur and Morgana, choosing Arthur because he believed in the good inside him. Arthur knighted Mordred a Knight of Camelot, but Merlin still did not trust him. When Mordred's love interest Kara was captured and executed by Arthur, Mordred decided to turn against Camelot and ally himself with Morgana, revealing Merlin's true identity to her. Mordred succeeded in mortally wounding Arthur during the Battle of Camlann, but was ultimately killed by him in the process.

percival

Sir Percival was a Knight of the Round Table. He was a common villager until his family was killed by Cenred's army, after which he pledged his allegiance to Arthur Pendragon and became a Knight of Camelot.

Lancelot

Lancelot was a Knight of the Round Table, one of the few people aware of Merlin's magic, and one of Guinevere Pendragon's first loves. Born a common villager, he dedicated his life to becoming a Knight of Camelot after his family was killed by raiders. He served as a Knight for roughly one year before sacrificing himself to banish the Dorocha. Many, including Arthur Pendragon, regarded Lancelot as the noblest of Camelot's Knights. However, his reputation was tarnished when a Shade version of him conjured by Morgana had a brief affair with Guinevere on the eve of her wedding to Arthur.

camelot

Camelot is a kingdom founded by the legendary King Bruta. From the time of the Great Purge, magic was all but wiped from the land after the death of Ygraine Pendragon. It has been ruled by the Pendragon family after being conquered by Uther Pendragon. In modern times, Camelot has been turned into myth. Its last known ruler was Queen Guinevere Pendragon, who presumably ruled as Queen Regent after her husband, King Arthur, died.
