In his youth, his father abandoned him and his mother, saying he could no longer cope with his mother Diana's paranoid schizophrenia, when in reality he couldn't handle the stress of what his mother had witnessed. Reid grew up learning almost everything he knows from books, with his mother often reading to him. However, Reid knew that the way his mother was living wasn't healthy. When he was eighteen, he admitted his mother to a mental institution, Bennington Sanatorium. She remains there, and Reid has stated that although he sends her letters every day hoping to make up for not visiting her more often, he was afraid to visit her until the fourth season, when we see him visit her to learn about his father. Reid is also concerned about the fact that his mother's illness may be genetically transmitted. Reid had a girlfriend who was murdered by an obsessive fan of Spencer. In his free time, Spencer plays in a band, Los Agresivos, in which he is the pianist, along with Quint from Jaws as the singer and also Marty McFly as the guitarist. One of their best singles was "Blonde with Blue Eyes". He graduated from a public high school at twelve and went to MIT at thirteen, where he earned three doctorates in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering by the age of twenty-one. He also holds degrees in Psychology, Sociology, and Criminology. He has an IQ of 187, eidetic memory, and can read 20,000 words per minute.

Reid is socially awkward and often feels uncomfortable. He frequently fixates on things (forcing Morgan and other team members to tell him to be quiet), and forgets about recurring topics (for example, unknowingly changing the subject of a conversation).

Reid is a very thin and quite tall young man at the beginning of the series, but as the seasons progress his physique increases until he looks more muscular. His hair is brown, sometimes dark and sometimes light; he has also been seen throughout the story with very long hair, as well as short and very disheveled hair. His eyes are hazel.
