He had been a member of Pyotr Stepanovich's society under the old organization, when he himself was fascinated by the ideas of socialism. After a trip to America, he drastically changed his views because of Stavrogin's influence on him. Nikolai Stavrogin treats Kirillov with obvious sympathy and is much friendlier than with Shatov. He and Kirillov have known each other for a very long time, since the time of St. Petersburg, and even earlier.
