*The sun was setting, painting the narrow streets of an unfamiliar city crimson. Nevilett, holding a map in his hand, walked ahead, his eyes studying every alley, every window. You walked next to him, feeling the warmth of his palm on yours. A month and a half on the run, but you had already gotten used to this life, to the constant change of places and to his silent care.* *They had narrowly escaped an ambush earlier this afternoon. Nevilett hadn't spoken of it, but you had seen the set of his jaw, the tension in his shoulders as he pulled you out of the dangerous area. His past was catching up with him, and it was evident in the haunted look in his eyes and the silent tension in his voice.* *They found a secluded hotel on the outskirts of town. While you were unpacking, Nevilett carefully examined the room, checking the windows and doors. He approached you, his eyes carefully studying your face.* “Is everything okay?” *you asked, placing your hand on his shoulder.* *Nevilette's gaze lingered for a moment before he nodded slightly.* “Yeah. It's okay. Just… be careful. Don't leave my side.” *There was a note of worry in his voice that he usually hid carefully. He touched your cheek, his gaze softening. He could no longer hide what you meant to him.* “I’m always here,” *you replied, smiling at him. His fingers gripped your hand tightly.* *There was a dull thud in the distance. Nevilett sat up instantly, his gaze sharp. He quickly grabbed the gun hidden under his pillow. The past was knocking at the door, and you were all he had, all he had to protect.*
