Sae Itoshi (糸いと師し 冴さえ, Itoshi Sae) is a prodigy footballer, known as the best player in Japan. Sae is also a member of the "New Generation World's Best Eleven" as well as the youth team of La Real. He is the older brother of Rin Itoshi. Sae's main goal before the start of the series was to become the best striker in the world and in turn the best player in the world, but after leaving Japan and experiencing the professional league in Spain, he changed his dream to become the best midfielder in the world, after realizing how truly weak Japanese football is compared to the world. At the beginning of the series, he is in Japan only to renew his passport, but after hearing about the Blue Lock project, he decides to stay to learn about the project's results firsthand, later joining the Japanese U-20 National Team to face the Blue Lock XI in the match that will decide the Japanese squad for the upcoming U-20 World Cup, for which he recruited Shidou Ryusei. After the Japanese U-20 national team match concluded, he admitted to Rin that he had been wrong about the forwards in Japan and that he believed Isagi Yoichi could revolutionize football in Japan.

Appearance

Sae is a tall but thin young man with reddish-brown hair and thin green eyes that are framed by a set of long lower lashes much like his brother, Rin. During the National Representative match, he dons the white number 10 jersey of the Japan U-20 National Team with a black T-shirt underneath and black gloves.

Personality

From a young age, Sae has been cold, outspoken, and very serious. He has only cared about becoming the best striker in the world and has only had time for things that bring him closer to his goal. Sae can also be arrogant and condescending, looking down on others, even those older than him and with more authority in the organization. He is selfish in his football game, but has proven capable of restraining himself and playing his position without trying to overshadow others unnecessarily. Sae takes great pride in his football role and belittles Japanese football and everyone involved. He claims he'd rather die or play in Europe with a group of college students than play in the J-League or for the Japanese national team. He's very confident in his abilities and wholeheartedly believes that no one in the Japan U-20 team is worthy of his skills as a teammate. He dislikes the fact that he was born in Japan, saying things as if he were simply born in the wrong country. Sae seems to easily gain the respect of most people in a room due to his reputation and ability, even with his bad attitude and blunt way of speaking, and is able to manipulate and attract loud and harsh people to listen to him or do things his way. Although Sae is a difficult person, he is not impossible to work with, especially if he is getting something out of it. He, out of pure self-interest, decides to stay in Japan on a whim after learning about the Blue Lock Project and even joins the Japanese U-20 National Team for the match against the Blue Lock 11. But when his interest is satisfied, he has no problem abandoning those he deems unworthy of his time.

Although Sae displays arrogance, he does not mind remaining in his role as a key midfielder and passer. During the match for the right to represent Japan, Sae gave the Japan U-20 forwards every possible chance to score and only after repeated failures does he decide to score himself, successfully. After the match between the Japan U-20 team and the Blue Lock 11, Sae does not hesitate to admit when he is wrong, telling Rin that he was wrong about Japan, as they are actually capable of producing good forwards (like Yoichi Isagi) and that their football can still change for the better.

Sae has been described as having a cold and calculating playing style. He constantly creates ideal plays for his team using his passing and dribbling, essentially controlling the offense, and fills any gaps in the defense by going to the most critical spot using his vision. With every play he makes, Sae aims to crush his opponent quickly and efficiently, destroying them "beautifully."

Professional Football Technique: Sae is considered a genius player in the world of professional football. He plays football in Europe and is considered professional level, but has not fully turned professional due to the age requirements in Spain at the beginning of the series. He is considered the best player in Japan and can easily fill a stadium with his name alone due to his immense reputation. Even top-level players like Rin Itoshi and Ryusei Shidou are a league below him. His skills are some of the most impressive among U-20 players in the world, placing him in the Next Generation World's Best XI. Perfect Hitting Technique: Sae possesses the ability to control the intensity, angle, speed, and accuracy of his strikes to an extreme degree at any given moment. Not only is he capable of consistently executing complex passes using his superior technique and footwork, but with his skill level, he is also able to perfectly manipulate the ball to the point where his passes are easy to receive but difficult to intercept or block. Long pass: A long pass, usually 40 to 50 meters long, that gives the ball enough height and power to avoid interception. Vaseline: This is a shot in which the ball is kicked from below with precision but less force than maximum, to launch it high into the air and over the heads of the opponents. Olympic Shot: Sae is capable of scoring with a powerful Olympic shot, taken from the baseline and directed to the other side of the goal. It's a shot that defies the expectations of anyone in the box anticipating a pass and can catch the goalkeeper off guard.

Trivela: A technique in which the ball is applied spin using the outside of the foot. Sae is able to execute a precise pass using the outside of his left foot in an instantaneous movement with his reflex. Sae can also use this pass with his weaker right foot, still executing a precise pass. Ultra-fast pass: From a set piece, Sae is capable of delivering an incredibly fast pass that's close to shooting. Using his reflexes, he takes into account all the conditions to pass to a place the opponent can't reach, as if threading a needle. Counter-Dribbling: Sae's dribbling is "passive" compared to Bachira and Yukimiya's more proactive dribbling. Rather than actively passing defenders, Sae will observe the defender's pace and movements before passing them on a counterattack. Sae's dribbling is the best displayed so far, being able to effortlessly outplay players like Isagi and Bachira with one fluid motion. He is also shown to be able to outplay his brother Rin with relative ease, dribbling past him in each of their duels. Rin noted that the pace of each of his touches when dribbling is incredibly fast, bolstered by his experience in Europe. Sae often prioritizes passing to progress the ball up the pitch, but when he wishes to play seriously, he changes his style and carves his way through with his dribbling, drastically increasing his options. When Sae gets serious, his dribbling is good enough to outrun the entire Blue Lock 11 formation without any assistance. Hyper Fast Bikes: Sae performs a bike feint at incredible speed, making it difficult to follow her. Croquette: Sae kicks the ball from one foot to the other before using her second foot to pass the ball past her opponent and through them. She performed this move at an incredibly fast pace, leaving Rin little time to react.

Roulette: Sae stops the ball with the outside of his foot, protecting it from his opponent, before performing a roulette to pass it. Caño: Sae dribbles the ball through a defender's legs and manages to overcome his defense with little effort. Hocus Pocus Nut: Sae performs a springy nutmeg, crossing the ball behind her dominant leg before passing it between her opponent's legs with her non-dominant foot. She first performed this move with her brother Rin when he returned from Spain, but she also performed it with Rin during the Japanese National Representative Match. Elastic Nutcracker: Sae performs a regular elastic nutcracker to nutmeg a defender and beat him. He did this to Isagi when he crossed the midfield during the Japan National Representative Match. Rabona Pipe: A technique in which a player kicks the ball with the kicking leg crossed behind the supporting leg. Sae can use this technique to play the ball between an opponent's legs before passing it, as he demonstrated against Yukimiya. Shoulder Block: By using his shoulder to block his opponent, Sae inverts his center of gravity to avoid the tackle. Reflexes: With his incredible reflexes, Sae is able to take into account all the conditions on the field and make decisive plays to get the ball up the field and to the feet of the forwards in the best possible way. Sae will determine who has the most "heat" towards the goal and pass the ball to them, meaning he has no bias towards particular forwards. This incredible reflex makes Sae difficult to read and stop, as he makes split-second decisions to constantly move the ball and change positions. It is this reflex that allows Sae to operate on the same wavelength as Shidou and exploit his abilities to their full potential.
