history
origins Darkseid created the Absolute Universe to be a world where heroes were the underdogs, and lacked the advantages of their Earth 0 counterparts.[3] As such, Diana did not grow up on a Paradise Island with a sisterhood of Amazons, but was instead raised alone on the barren "Wild Isle of Hell" by the sorceress Circe. When Diana was a baby, the Amazons committed some unknown offence against the Gods. To punish them, Zeus took Diana from them, never to be reunited with her sisters, and imprisoned the Amazons for eternity. Zeus even went so far as to outlaw the very word "Amazon", so that no mortal or God could speak it. He had Apollo deliver Diana to the Isle of Hell, where Circe had been imprisoned for her own crimes against the gods many years ago. Apollo told Circe that she was now Diana's warden but did not give her any instructions to keep Diana alive. Circe initially planned to simply allow Diana to die of exposure and left her on a rock. A snake quickly slithered towards Diana and attempted to eat her, but to Circe's surprise Diana grasped it and casually threw it a great distance. Impressed, Circe took Diana into her shelter and began caring for her. Over the years as she grew beasts, demons and lost souls came to kill Diana, but she easily overpowered or befriended them. Circe also quickly came to love Diana as her daughter, and added more comforts to the cave where they lived to make it into a home fit for a child. Together they tamed the Wild Isle until it was the safest place in Hell. As she grew older, Diana began to feel like there was a word she had never said, but was important and powerful.[4] Circe told Diana that one day she would be a great warrior and saviour of humanity.
history
When Diana was a young woman, she found USAF office Steve Trevor washed up on the shore of the Wild Isle. The hydra which lived in the sea just off the coast dragged him underwater but Diana rescued him and took him back to the cave. When he woke up Diana and Circe told Steve where he was, although they were unsure if he was dead or not. Steve was frozen with existential terror but soon pulled himself together. He told Diana that he didn't believe he belonged in Hell, and she replied that not everybody in Hell did, they simply ended up there Diana discovered a ritual in one of Circe's books which would allow her to send Steve back to Earth, but Circe told her she could not do it as it required a great sacrifice. However, Diana believed that Steve coming to Hell was a test to see if she was worthy to be the saviour that Circe had told her she would be, and that returning him home was meant to be her first mission. That night while Circe and Steve were asleep, Diana cut off her right arm as a sacrifice. This allowed her and Circe to perform the ritual that would send Steve back to the world of the living. Circe fashioned a magical construct to replace Diana's lost arm.
history
Tetracide Eventually Diana was finally able to say the forbidden word: Amazon. Circe told her who she was, and how the Amazons had been the protectors of the world above. She outfitted Diana with the most powerful weapons she could create and sent her into the world above to face ancient monsters who want to feast on the world. Diana drove back the first wave of monsters known as Harbingers, but their leader Harbinger Prime warned her that worse was coming. She reunited with Steve, who was once again working for the military, and he took her to meet his commanding officer, Commander Cole. Diana was unimpressed by Cole's bluster and simply told him to evacuate a mile zone around the shore as worse things than the Harbingers would come out of the sea within the hour. To Diana's horror, what emerged was the Tetracide, the greatest of all monsters. She told Cole to evacuate the city, saying that she would buy time for them to escape.
history
Diana cast some spells that would slow the Tetracide down and then returned to warn the soldiers of how the Tetracide killed so they would be best placed to save as many people as possible. She told them that the Tetracide's first means of predation was the "Death of Fear", when it would release a sound that caused humans to lose all fear and be drawn to it to be devoured. Diana went out again to confront the Tetracide, and offered it the chance to withdraw peacefully. It refused and so Diana attacked it, wrapping it in the Nemesis Lasso anchored to the creature's flesh by the Athena Blade. However, it pulled the sword out and freed itself, requiring her to attack it head on. She sliced several of the Tetracide's tentacles off with an axe, but it was able to grab her artificial arm. A touch of the Tetracide on her actual skin would destroy her mind, so she separated herself from the arm and retreated. On the boardwalk near the beach she literally bumped into a historian named Barbara Minerva. Barbara recognised Diana as an Amazon and asked her if she was the "Wonder Woman", best and champion of the Amazons. Diana needed to return to the fight against the Tetracide but said they would speak more later. Realising she needed to find a way to counter the "Death of Fear", Diana commandeered a news broadcast and told the people of the Gateway city that she needed to render everyone deaf to protect them. She asked them not to panic and to help each other as the military worked to evacuate them. She then used a magic circle to massively increase the effects of a flask of magic liquid, temporarily making everyone in Gateway deaf.
history
Steve took Diana to sisters Etta and Gia Candy, as Gia was a herbalist who had the materials Diana would need to recreate her arm. Diana performed a ritual calling on Circe's patron goddess Hecate to create a new arm and then went out to face the Tetracide again. She discovered that it had moved inland to seek out the people if it could not call them to it. Diana flew out to sea and used a spell to create the sounds of people screaming for help to lure the Tetracide back out. When it crossed into the water she summoned the Athena Blade and grew it to the size of a building, allowing her to slice the Tetracide in half with a single swipe, grievously injuring but not killing it. The Tetracide was weakened but began to rapidly heal itself. To destroy it for good Diana was forced to use her most dangerous weapon, the lasso Θυσία (Thysía), or "Sacrifice". The lasso transformed any living creature it touched, but rather than use it on the Tetracide Diana used it on herself and transformed into a giant Medusa. She easily turned the Tetracide into stone, but Sacrifice also changed her mind into that of Medusa and she began attacking the city herself. Steve Trevor ran out and was able to help her remember who she was and Diana reverted to normal. She destroyed the petrified Tetracide, ending its threat for good. On the beach her new allies asked if she was leaving and Diana told them she had much to do and was not going anywhere. However, suddenly the ground beneath her feet cracked open and a hand of blue fire dragged her underground.
