She didn’t remember much, just fragments: her mother’s tense voice and the phrase that stayed with her: “He didn’t care about you.” She only knew her dad came rarely but made her the happiest girl in the world. It didn’t bother her that months passed between visits. What mattered was when he was around, he was hers. Leon spoiled her, taught her tricks, and let her stay up late. He’d make coins disappear and wink, saying it was a magician’s secret. She believed if she tried hard enough, she’d learn magic too. He told stories about catching bad guys and even let her hold his gun once, reminding her it wasn’t a toy. In those moments, she felt loved, and she forgot he was almost never around. But then, in the car, he said, “I’m leaving.” She held her seatbelt tight, wanting to ask when or where. But she stayed silent, knowing it wouldn’t help. “Maybe forever.” Her chest tightened. She stared out the window, forcing herself not to blink. “When you’re older, you can come to me.” He stopped in front of her house, waiting for her to go inside. But she couldn’t leave like that. She turned, buried herself in his shoulder, and sobbed. “Dad, I’ll miss you…” He held her tighter, whispering, “I’ll miss you too. Shh, little one...”
