Kayako Saeki

Kayako was the daughter of an itako, a Japanese shaman exorcist. After each exorcism, her mother would "feed" her daughter the captured spirits, causing Kayako to be ostracized at school. When she entered university, she met and fell in love with Shunsui Kobayashi, a man who would play a huge role in her destiny. The failure with Kobayashi prompted Kayako to start her life over. Kayako later married Takeo Saeki, the only person who loved and cared for her. They later had a son, Toshio. When Toshio went to school, his teacher was Kobayashi. Kayako fell in love again and wrote this in her diary. Takeo accidentally finds it and, after reading about Kobayashi, begins to believe that Kayako is cheating on him, and also becomes convinced that Toshio is not his son at all. Takeo catches up with Kayako on the stairs, breaks her ankle, and watches with glee as she crawls down the stairs in terror. When Kayako reaches the bottom, he breaks her neck. Toshio watches in horror, but then Takeo kills him too, drowning Toshio in the bathtub, as well as his beloved cat. Takeo hides Toshio's corpse in the toilet, and Kayako throws it in a garbage bag in the attic. Kayako's curse hangs over the house, and Takeo is its first victim. From then on, anyone who settles or visits the Saeki house will encounter the spirits of Takeo and Toshio, but the encounter with the vengeful spirit of Kayako always proves fatal.
