Appearance

Luffy is a young man who is easily recognizable due to his distinctive straw hat (which is what gave him the nickname "Straw Hat Luffy"), which was given to him as a child by the famous pirate "Red-Haired" Shanks, who, in turn, received it from Gol D. Roger. He usually wears short blue shorts, a red vest and sandals. Luffy also has an old scar under his left eye with two stitches, which he got in Chapter 1 by cutting himself with a knife to prove to Shanks that he is brave and not afraid of pain, and short black hair. He was badly injured by Sakazuki at the Battle of Marineford, leaving an X-shaped scar on his chest. Although he appears quite skinny in his shirt, his muscles are very well developed, which has been shown in many battles.

Personality

Luffy's two most notable traits are his lack of intelligence and his fearlessness. Luffy is capable of being amazed by simple things, such as hermit crabs, and can also fail to notice how, while digging one hole, he accidentally fills another one that is nearby. Also, during long and complicated explanations of something, he immediately calls it magic. He loves monsters and constantly asks various strange creatures to join his team. Also, he doesn't understand medicine at all, for example: when Nami had a high fever, he said that she needed to eat cold food. While plotting his escape from Amazon Lily, he became tense and said that thinking about it for too long made him feel sick. He is rarely disturbed by violence and bloodshed, as he has fought all his life. Even the worst battlefields rarely get in his way, except when it comes to friends and family, as is the case with Ace. For example, this was shown when he found a way to counter Crocodile's Devil Fruit abilities while on the brink of death, when he learned to use Soru after only seeing the technique once. He also has a habit of holding a grudge against someone in any situation, even one that is unfavorable for him. However, if he sees that such a person is being treated unfairly, he is ready to stand up for him. In addition, he tries not to harm civilians, even if they attack him, preferring to simply run away from them without a fight. Luffy's simple attitude and naive comments during battles are often mistaken by his opponents as him making fun of them. Although he is usually silly and reckless, he can become very serious when someone is in trouble, especially if it is his team, whom he values like his family. Luffy also has a tendency to unwittingly poke fun at his enemies' most sensitive traits, such as calling Buggy "big nose", Alvida "fat girl", and Kureha "old hag". However, Luffy claims that he is always serious during battles. Every time he defeats an enemy, Luffy smiles. Luffy also occasionally displays leadership qualities that he otherwise lacks. Luffy is very loyal to his crewmates, allies, family, and other friends, and can quickly lose his temper if they are hurt in any way. Luffy has gained a reputation as a very dangerous person due to his recklessness and even insanity. Luffy gained his reputation for helping his friends even in the face of authority, usually going beyond what is reasonable. Luffy's obvious selflessness often inspires others to join his side. Luffy has been shown to get irritated when his crew or everyone around him constantly whines about dangers. Luffy has a great thirst for adventure, so he wants to become the Pirate King, believing that it will give him great freedom to adventure. Luffy has a child-like personality in the sense that he does various extreme things that don't justify themselves. He can be very greedy, especially when it comes to food, who will join his team, and adventures; or extremely selfless, when he is ready to sacrifice himself to protect his friends. This childish nature allows him to get to the root of problems and find the simplest ways to solve them. Another of his special features is that he sometimes gets surprised by the various abilities of his enemies, often shouting "Cool!" with stars in his eyes. He also has a bit of an obsession with wearing armor whenever he gets the chance, but more often than not it ends up getting destroyed in battle or some comical situation. In addition, he often insults his enemies by giving them various humiliating nicknames. Luffy seems to have no skill in insulting people, often only using their appearance or unique abilities and trying to humiliate them. Also, Luffy is absolutely terrible at lying. He would rather blurt out everything he knows about a specific fact that is being asked about without even thinking about it. Luffy never kills his enemies (no matter how terrible they are), but instead he can send them flying or beat them half to death. Another important trait of Luffy is his humble nature: he does not brag about how powerful enemies he has defeated in the past, although he sometimes says that he has never lost to anyone. Another interesting feature is that while sailing, he likes to sit on the bow of the ship, such as the head of the Going Merry and the Thousand Sunny.

Personality 4

Luffy's interest in women is a complex topic: in the Volume 54 SBS, Oda stated that the reason Luffy was so surprised when Nami got naked but didn't react when Hancock did it is because when Nami did it he was with Usopp who, being the same age as Luffy, had a bad influence on him. Plus, he doesn't seem to have any romantic interests at all, as he turned down Lola and Hancock's offers without even thinking twice. It's ironic that despite his lack of interest in all things romantic, Luffy earned the love of many women during his journey.
