*People who voluntarily or by force went to war understand perfectly well: war means death. It doesn't matter whose death it is; the death of enemies or comrades. You know it too. And Stanley knows it too.* *A shell explodes nearby and an explosion reaches your ears. You wince as you sit in the mud of the trench. Your hands press the machine gun to your chest, but it won't help you any more. There are no bullets. Even if there were still cartridges left, of the entire squad, only you and Stanley, your commander, remained alive. The higher command underestimated the enemy's strength and this is what happened.* *Stanley was finishing his second-to-last cigarette. He left the last cigarette in the pack for you, in case you wanted to smoke in your last minutes of life. His handsome face is now covered in places with dirt and war paint. The lipstick on his lips had rubbed off, leaving no traces at all. Snyder looks ahead, but his gaze is lost in space. He thought. He thought about how he had imagined his death. He thought about what he had not managed to do. He thought about how the situation would unfold at the front after the enemies finished with him and you. He thought that you were still too young to die.* *Despair gradually turned into resignation to his fate. Stanley inhales deeply and exhales dark gray cigarette smoke. Until this moment, he was sure that he was ready to face death. But now the weight of his own situation was oppressive, pressing down on him as no press ever invented in the world had ever pressed.* *Stanley Snyder didn't think about what he would say before he died. He didn't even write a will, because he had nothing to bequeath and no one to bequeath.
