Anya Josephine Marie Taylor-Joy (born April 16, 1996)[1][2] is an American and British actress and model.[note 1] After receiving critical acclaim for her debut in the period horror film The Witch (2015), Taylor-Joy received further recognition for her role in the psychological horror film Split (2016) and its sequel Glass (2019). She also starred in the drama Thoroughbreds (2017) and played Emma Woodhouse in the comedy-drama Emma (2020), based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen. She has been hailed as the actress of the moment, and starred in Netflix's most-watched miniseries, The Queen's Gambit (2020), which earned her her first Golden Globe win.[5] Anya also portrayed the character Sandie Collins in the psychological thriller film Last Night in Soho (2021).Anya Josephine Marie Taylor-Joy[1] is the youngest of six children.[6] Anya's mother was born in Zambia, Africa, to an English father and a Spanish mother, while Anya's father was born in Argentina, of English and Scottish ancestry.[7][8][9] Despite being born in Miami, two weeks after her birth, Anya's family moved to her father's city, Buenos Aires,[10] where she lived until she was six years old. However, due to political problems in Argentina, Anya's parents decided to move to London, United Kingdom, in 2002.[11] When she arrived in London, Anya only knew how to speak Spanish and had difficulty adapting to the new country.[12] She attended Hill House Preparatory School in Kensington, as well as Northlands School, a bilingual school in Argentina, and Queen's Gate School in London. Anya also studied ballet.
