Koby (コビー, Kobï?), also known as the Hero of the Rocky Port Incident (ロッキー港事件の英雄, Rokkī Pōto Jiken no Eiyū?)[2] or simply Hero (英雄, Eiyū?),[2][3] is a captain[13] of the Navy headquarters and member of the secret special unit SWORD.[7] Before the timeskip, he was part of Vice Admiral Garp's team along with his partner Helmeppo. Before working for the Navy, he was an involuntary part of the Alvida Pirates until he was freed by Luffy, being the first person Luffy befriended on his journey. [4] He reunited with Luffy during the Return to Water 7 Arc, after becoming a full-fledged Marine soldier. During the timeskip, Koby gained fame as a hero for his actions through the Rocky Port Incident. After a failed attempt to arrest Boa Hancock, he was held prisoner by the Blackbeard Pirates until he escaped with the help of Perona, his SWORD colleagues, and his mentor, Monkey D. Garp. Due to his status as a hero within the Navy, Cross Guild has assigned Koby a five-star bounty, worth Belly 500,000,000.[10] He is Luffy's ally during the Romance Dawn Arc. He and Helmeppo are the central characters on the cover of Kobymeppo's Diary and secondary antagonists of the Return to Water 7 Arc. Koby is also a brief antagonist in the Marineford Arc.

appearance

In his first appearance, Koby was a shy little boy, short, with round glasses, pink hair parted in the middle, and a round face. He was wearing a simple white short-sleeved button-down shirt, black pants, and white sneakers with red soles.[4] After training with Monkey D. Garp and his partner Helmeppo, Koby became leaner and taller, about Luffy's height. He also gained a cross-shaped scar on his forehead above his right eye and a second scar, on his left foot. His hair grew a little longer and he became a little coarser. As for his clothing, he wears a jacket with standard Navy colors, navy blue pants, black shoes, and a blue scarf around his neck. He also wears his glasses on his forehead, as opposed to how he normally wears them, and has added an orange scarf with sun patterns underneath the glasses.[8] After the timeskip, Koby has grown a little taller, reaching Garp's shoulders, looking even slightly older than Luffy. He now wears a blue scarf and a standard Navy officers' cape with the word "justice" on the back on the shoulders. Koby is first introduced as a cowardly cabin boy aboard Alvida's ship. Due to fear of being crushed by her Iron Mace, whenever she asked him who was the most beautiful at sea, he would reply, "You, Miss Alvida." His fear even forced him to suppress his desire to be a Marine. His fears were reflected in other people's dreams, as he stated that it would be impossible for Luffy to conquer the Grand Line and become the Pirate King, though he was primarily thinking of the consequences for his own chances of survival. Eventually with the help of Luffy's boundless optimism he found the courage to pursue his dream by escaping from Alvida and becoming a Marine.[4] As the pair continued their travels across the East Blue, Koby maintained a timid and cautious demeanor, relying on Luffy to perform dangerous tasks and becoming alarmed by his companion's reckless behavior. He also proved to be quite perceptive, noting that it was strange for the citizens of Shells Town to fear a Marine Captain and telling Luffy that he had a bad feeling about it. During his journey with Luffy he seemed to gain some courage, such as when he told Luffy not to worry about him when Helmeppo pointed his gun at him. Koby's naive belief in the integrity of the Marines was dashed when he witnessed the actions of Axe Hand Morgan and his son, Helmeppo, who would later become his partner, though the actions of these two corrupt Marines only strengthened his resolve to become, in his own words, a true Marine soldier. Marine Garp is Koby and Helmeppo's mentor, keeping them out of trouble as long as they aren't slacking off. He harshly instructs them using his "love" fists. Despite this, Koby admires Garp despite his eccentric temper, as he wouldn't be where he is if it weren't for him. Garp worried about him when he screams to stop the massacre at Marineford during the war against Whitebeard.[1] After his father was discharged from the Marines, Helmeppo lost access to the luxurious life he had led under Morgan's protection. He was forced to become an apprentice alongside Koby and despite Koby's attempts to make them friends, he refused to do so. After being kidnapped by his own father and finding himself held hostage by him, Helmeppo disowned his father and began to change his personality, becoming braver and abandoning his spoiled-child behavior. Eventually, Koby and Helmeppo become good friends and are now working together in the Marines. Also, Helmeppo seems to care a lot about Koby, as he ran to help him after he was defeated by Luffy. [19] Koby appears to have a great fear of Fleet Admiral Sakazuki. He and Helmeppo were shocked to see him execute a Marine soldier. [20] Furthermore, after Koby's speech, Sakazuki attempted to assassinate him, causing Koby to fear him even more. [1] This incident did not affect Koby's position in the Marines, as he was promoted to the rank of Captain after Akainu became the new Fleet Admiral. As such, he maintains regular contact with his superior X Drake with whom he seems to have a fairly close and trusting relationship as he was shown talking to him about Monkey D. Enemies Pirates of Alvida Koby was forced to serve as a servant under Alvida and her crew for two years; after he accidentally boarded their ship. Because of his cowardice he followed Alvida's orders to the letter. He was often the butt of jokes by the pirates of Alvida's crew and was forced to claim that Alvida was the most beautiful woman in the world, as if he didn't he would be punished by her. When Luffy showed up, he explained to Koby that he was willing to die for his dream. After Koby realized that he was also willing to die for his dream, he found enough courage to openly defy Alvida and express his true feelings for her.[4] Morgan Initially, Koby naively believed in the integrity of all Marines, however, after meeting Morgan in Shells Town and realizing that the townspeople were frightened of Morgan's behavior, he realized that not all Marines are fair, further encouraging him to become a Marine soldier.
