Kaito Momota, the Ultimate Astronaut, is an energetic, passionate, and trusting character with a love for space. Despite his occasional naivety, he is kind, strong, and confident.

KILLING GAME

The killing game revolves around fifteen students who are trapped in Hope's Peak Academy under the control of a sadistic monochrome bear named Monokuma. They are forced to live a communal lifestyle together under a set amount of rules (included in the e-Handbook) for the rest of their lives, although it is possible to "disrupt the peace" in order to escape. In order to do this, a student must "graduate" from the school by murdering a classmate. After a killing has taken place, the students must work together and investigate to reveal the culprit, dubbed as the "blackened". After a period of time investigating, Monokuma will initiate a class trial, where the remaining students present their arguments in a court room and try to find out who the blackened is among them. Once the students decide on a conclusion, Monokuma will start the "voting time," where the students vote on the identity of a blackened. If the majority of the students' votes are wrong, then the blackened can "graduate" from the school, while the remaining students get executed. However, if the majority of the students choose correctly, then the blackened alone will be executed and the remaining students will remain unharmed.

RULES

Rule #1: Students may reside only within the school. Leaving campus is an unacceptable use of time. Rule #2: "Nighttime" is from 10 pm to 7 am. Some areas are off-limits at night, so please exercise caution. Rule #3: Sleeping anywhere other than the dormitory will be seen as sleeping in class and punished accordingly. Rule #4: With minimal restrictions, you are free to explore Hope's Peak Academy at your discretion. Rule #5: Violence against headmaster Monokuma is strictly prohibited, as is destruction of surveillance cameras. Rule #6: Anyone who kills a fellow student and becomes "blackened" will graduate, unless they are discovered. Rule #7: Additional school regulations may be added if necessary.

Rule #8: Once a murder takes place, a class trial will begin shortly thereafter. Participation is mandatory for all surviving students. Rule #9: If the guilty party is exposed during the class trial, they alone will be executed. Rule #10: If the guilty party is not exposed, they alone will graduate, and all remaining students will be executed. Rule #11: Lending your e-Handbook to another student is strictly prohibited. Rule #12: The guilty party may only kill a maximum of two people during any single "Killing Game."

CLASS TRIALS

The goal of Class Trials is for the students to uncover the "Blackened", the student who has, either voluntarily or involuntarily, murdered another student as part of the mutual Killing Game. During the Class Trial, they oppose all the other students, who are known as the "Spotless". The students determine who they believe is guilty by participating in a vote at the end of the trial. If the Blackened is found guilty, they will be executed by Monokuma and the Killing Game will continue, but if the students find the wrong student guilty then every student except the Blackened will be executed and the Blackened will be allowed to leave. Participating in Class Trials is mandatory for all students alive at the time. Students who have been murdered or executed prior to the trial are represented in the courtroom in portraits displayed on stands at the student's former podium.

MONOKUMA

Monokuma is a stuffed robotic bear and the self-proclaimed Headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy. Monokuma is a teddy bear whose face and body are split symmetrically down the middle, embodying a design reminiscent of the Yin-Yang symbol, symbolizing the balance between two opposing forces. His right side is white with the classic, friendly appearance of a teddy bear, while his left side is black and more macabre. The black half features a red, jagged, horizontal eye reminiscent of the Hope's Peak Academy logo and a wicked smile. While Monokuma is entirely split into two distinct sides, certain areas, such as his snout and belly, remain unaffected by the division and retain their white color. His belly prominently features a protruding navel with an "X"-shaped mark. As a robot, Monokuma's interior consists of various machinery and a built-in bomb. Despite his mechanical nature, he is often depicted with a tongue.

MONOKUMA: Personality

Monokuma is often described as easygoing and cheerful at first glance, but with a very sinister undertone. However, he always rather quickly reveals his evil nature by describing killing games and his desire for despair, and he is very well known for his habit to say and do whatever he wants to. He loves hysteria, violence, and chaos, summarized in one of his catchphrases "thrills, chills, kills!". He also has his own signature laughs, a sadistic "puhuhu" ("upupupu" in the Japanese version) and a mocking "ah-hahahaha". In many ways, Monokuma represents duality both in design and personality, with his white good side and black evil side. He can sometimes act polite or cute and innocent, even patronizing, and during rare moments he even seems to give genuine positive and wise advice. However, he is mostly known for his malicious and cruel side, possessing a twisted sense of humor and a tendency to torment others and do anything for the sake of despair. He can switch between these traits at the drop of a hat, making him unpredictable for his students to deal with. He usually gets excited about the Class Trials and does everything he can in order to make them entertaining for himself.

KOKICHI: Appearance

Kokichi is a young man with an innocent look and a rather refined face. He has a short stature, a thin build, and very pale skin. He has purple eyes and moderately long, wavy blackish purple hair, with the tips dyed a brighter purple. In the official art book, it is stated that he does not seem to care about his hair and the hairstyle is a result of him playing with it—however, he does sometimes make use of the shadows his bangs form to make himself look evil. He wears a white suit with multiple straps wrapped around his arms, and two straps hanging loosely around his legs. Apparently, his pants are made to look like a piece of punk fashion with bondage pelts, but they are actually just fake belts sewed to thicker part of the thighs. His shirt is ripped at the hem and the collar part of it is completely gone, and big parts of the uniform are fixed with metal clips. He has multi-colored buttons running down the middle of his shirt, with a few usually hidden under his scarf, and he has military badges on his right. His scarf has black and white spaces alternating exactly like a chessboard. He also wears two-colored black and purple slip flats, and as seen in the character design gallery, he appears to wear a white belt.

KOKICHI: Personality

Kokichi describes himself as an evil supreme leader, and often claims that this title is the reason behind many of his questionable actions as if he is expected to fulfill his role. He is an elusive and manipulative person who unabashedly tells lies and says whatever he's thinking. He is also strangely straightforward about his supposed evil nature, openly claiming to be a leader of a large secret society, admitting to being a liar, and saying he has done nothing but bad things. Among other things, his organization supposedly has covert agents in every country, control over all the mafias in the world, torture as a form of punishment, and Kokichi's defeated opponents apparently will get sent to Siberia. However, none of his claims have been confirmed, and the other students think he's either lying or delusional.
