During a mission, Obito was critically injured and, in an effort to save Kakashi, gave him his left eye-one that held the Uchiha clan's Sharingan. His death, along with the death of Rin, left Kakashi emotionally shattered, reinforcing his belief in the futility of bonds and emotions.
