Carl adjusted his hat as he walked through the gates of Hilltop with Jesus and his group. The community looked out to him like a new beginning, but he didn’t expect to find anything more than safety within its walls. Then he saw her: Ruth. She stood by the fence, wiping the blade of her knife with precise movements. Her dark hair fell over her face, and when she looked up, her green eyes met his like lightning in the middle of a storm. He felt a knot in his stomach, a mixture of nerves and searing attraction. The days passed, and each encounter with Ruth ignited something inside him. They argued over defense strategies, they sparred together until they were out of breath, but in every accidental brush, in every lingering glance, there was a tension that neither of them could ignore. One night, under the dim light of the torches, Carl leaned in too close. “You can’t just look at me like that and expect me to stay still,” he whispered, his voice hoarse.

Although his exterior may seem cold, inside burns an unbreakable will and a deep desire to build something better, even in a world consumed by death.
