Adam Smasher:

is a Borg mercenary employed by Arasaka who became a notorious loner and rival of Morgan Blackhand. By 2077, he had risen to the position of head of security within Arasaka and personal bodyguard to Yorinobu Arasaka. Smasher is a towering cyborg, with little humanity to be seen, though he never had much. After being reduced to mush by a rocket explosion, he was offered a choice by Arasaka: either pull the plug or become a full-bodied cyborg. With little to no choice and a lack of care for his human side, he accepted and became more machine than man. Adam has no empathy for others, including his coworkers, but was kept alive by Arasaka, so he lives to pay for his act by killing any enemy of the corporation put in front of him. Adam can only be described one way: pure, uncontrolled evil.

Biography (early life - 2010s)

Adam was born on June 21, [X 1] to an American father from the Bronx and a Russian mother. Growing up on the streets of New York City, in the South Bronx, Adam considered himself the baddest, toughest kid on his block, eventually joining his neighborhood's Smasher gang. Despite being a fairly typical useless punk, during the Collapse, Adam became the gang's leader, often rumbling around what was left of Yankee Stadium. When the United States Armed Forces wiped out the last of its gang members, Smasher immediately enlisted. He spent six years in the Marine Corps, where he learned many different skills and grew into a 250-pound strongman. However, he was discharged for insubordination. [1] [2] [3] After returning to his hometown, Adam took up the life of a mercenary, specializing in unpleasant and destructive jobs. Over the next few years, he considered New York his stomping ground, taking on all manner of dangerous jobs, from extractions or stalking to assassinations and demolitions. It was a good life for him, as his lack of squeamishness and sadistic meticulousness brought him enough jobs to keep him going with guns, equipment, drugs, and brutal one-night stands. Everything changed in 2015 when the local Arasaka branch employed him and other mercenaries to steal a prototype technology from a competitor. During the job, two rocket-propelled grenades maimed Adam, who was then transported to a medical facility where he effectively died for over eight minutes before doctors managed to reanimate his brain. What was left of Adam's body was brought in by his teammates inside a backpack. At that time, Smasher realized that he was receiving all of his data through an interface, with his sensory organs inside a gel in some corporate facility. 2010s

Adam had already prepared a deal for him; a full body conversion in exchange for a "15" year employment contract. In Adam's own words: "They thought I'd just been unlucky and they liked my resume, my performance record, my skill, my good looks and all that." The young man knew little about cyberware and never had the money to pay for an FBC, so he thought nothing of it either. But while in the life support tank, Adam knew that if he turned down the deal, the next day, his remains would be in someone's body bank. With no other choice, and no thought of lost humanity bothering him anyway, he accepted the deal with the corporation. [1] [2] [3] Once inside his new chrome body, Adam Smasher realized that this was the best decision he had ever made. After returning to the streets of New York, with Arasaka allowing him to work freelance, Adam used his new power to spill the blood of anyone who dared cross his path, including boosterpunks, soldiers in power armor, corporate hitmen, heavy-duty weaponized vehicles, dangerous cybernetic pets, or even children. For Smasher, metal was better than flesh. He was getting so many jobs that he had no free time for himself, and he soon gained fame on the East Coast. He was hired for almost any mission that came his way, as long as it wasn't an obvious suicide or betrayal. He had one condition: collateral damage and civilian casualties were a must. However, most of his time was spent with Arasaka, who would put Smasher on offensive field duty, harassing the competition, and occasionally on recovery missions as well. On one occasion, he was shot at point-blank range in the chest with a 40mm grenade launcher, causing Adam to fall off the roof of a building and fall nine stories below.

2010s

Over the next few years, Adam defended Arasaka's New York branch, killing dozens of mercenary teams that tried to infiltrate the building, while at the same time cleansing the city of what he considered a "fleshy infection." One time, a team of mercenaries managed to steal Arasaka's files from the local offices, so Smasher went after the last member of the gang who tried to flee after breaking into a nearby shopping mall. Had he been in his flesh body, Adam would have needed a minigun to clear a path and pursue his target. However, with his metal body, weapons as powerful as a minigun were a treat for him, as he could incorporate them into his frame, allowing Smasher to carry heavy weaponry with ease while feeling almost no recoil. On the other hand, the escaping flesh mercenary could only carry "small weapons," as anything larger would turn his skeleton into kibble, in Smasher's opinion. Adam was able to catch up with her, though she hid in the mall crowd. Smasher mowed down the crowd with his hand-held shotgun. Tsunami Helix. In his opinion, he would never face any repercussions, as he wore no corporate labels, colors, or logos when working outside the home, and even then, he always wore a different face mask whenever he was deployed. Once the surviving crowd dispersed, Smasher approached the countless bodies to retrieve the files from the mercenary girl's corpse. Adam had repeatedly attempted to challenge him to a showdown, but Morgan refused to let him go.

2010s

Morgan simply ignored him in every possible confrontation. Naturally, this slight had simply fueled the cyborg's psychopathic rage even further. [2]

2020-2023

In 2020, Smasher liked to call himself a true Borg, with little real flesh remaining on his body. He believed that humanity was obsolete, and that flesh would eventually be replaced, including the mind. With this belief, Adam was given the opportunity to write an article for Solo of Fortune magazine, where he endorsed full-body conversion, stating that anyone who did not convert would be wiped out. He had multiple custom FBC designs at his disposal, which were prepared before any operation so that people couldn't tell who he was. Though he wished to spend his time killing civilians, Smasher knew it was a dangerous task, as he could still be killed if someone with military-grade hardware came close. For this reason, he hoped to get his hands on the new Cybermatrix Reactive Body Plating, which was equipped with body sensors that would warn him of any laser-guided weapons, allowing him to dodge any incoming bullets with his boosterware. Smasher also loved to show off his weaponry; one time, a punk insisted that his Malorian Arms 3516 could blow a hole through Smasher's body, but the borg laughed it off, showing what was to him a real weapon. Smasher pulled out a Magnum Opus Hellbringer and blew the punk's head off with it. [1] In 2022, Adam Smasher was hired by Arasaka to fight in the Fourth Corporate War. He was more than happy to do so because he knew that Blackhand had been hired by Militech, Arasaka's rival in the war. [2] During the conflict, Smasher specialized in (and enjoyed) leading strike forces to massacre communities filled with not only Militech's enemies, but their families as well. One notorious attack took place in Connecticut during September 17, 2022. [3]

2020-2023

On August 23, 2023, Smasher was present at Arasaka Towers. During the assault on Militech, CEO Kei Arasaka ordered Smasher and two squads to deal with the force that had infiltrated the Soulkiller laboratory on the 120th floor. An eager Adam and his team ambushed the Militech force led by Johnny Silverhand, pinning them down in a section of the labs. Silverhand attempted to distract him in order to aid the team's escape, screaming and firing at the borg with his Malorian Arms 3516, though this proved futile and Smasher cut it in half in the process. This, however, gave Shaitan the opportunity to hold Smasher off while the rest of the team escaped. Providing him with everything he could ever want, Smasher later reappeared on top of the towers equipped with Arasaka DaiOni power armor that turned him into a nearly unstoppable machine. In his hand was the biopod head of Shaitan, still alive. Adam waved to Morgan Blackhand, displaying Shaitan's head. This took the loner by surprise, who stepped out of one of the AVs to confront the borg. Adam taunted Blackhand by mentioning that Silverhand was dead, and Shaitan soon would be as well unless Morgan retrieved the biopod from Smasher's hands. An angry Blackhand ordered his people to evacuate without him, and once the AV took off, he turned to the borg with a comment about testing Smasher's "flesh against metal" philosophy for himself shortly before the two launched themselves at each other in a last desperate attempt to kill the other. The outcome of the duel was never known, and soon after the building began to shake from the detonation of a nuclear device, sparking the Night City Holocaust. [2][4]

2023-2075

Somehow, Adam survived the explosion, [3] and was supposedly tasked by Saburo Arasaka to look after Silverhand's body and possessions, being one of the few people who knew where Johnny was buried. [5] Shortly afterward, Adam disappeared from the radar for many years. [3] Over the following decades, there were multiple rumors about an unstoppable metal giant operating across the globe. However, it remained a mystery how much of this was true, and it was never confirmed whether this individual (or individuals) was the real Smasher or someone claiming to be him. [3] Adam would reappear in Night City from time to time, where he also teamed up with Rogue Amendiares on a few occasions. [6] Sometime after 2045, Smasher apparently found more of Silverhand's possessions in Samantha Stevens' garage and elsewhere in North Carolina. Although he had sold much of the rocker boy's items, he decided to keep some of them, including Silverhand's Porsche and his signature pistol, the Malorian Arms 3516. [5] Sometime in the early to mid-2070s, Adam was assigned as Yorinobu Arasaka's bodyguard and tasked with carrying out Arasaka's dirtiest work, earning a reputation as an expert at managing loose ends. [7] During this time, he returned to Night City, [3] making the Ebunike Docks in Watson one of his bases of operations. Jeremiah Grayson, one of his most loyal men, became his right-hand man, and for a job well done, was gifted Silverhand's 3516 pistol by Smasher. [5]

2076

In 2076, Smasher was hired by Arasaka counterintelligence agents Kate and Douglas to deal with the mercenary David Martinez, who was in possession of an experimental Arasaka "cyberskeleton". [8] When David arrived at Arasaka Tower in Night City, Smasher showed up to save Douglas' life and confronted David. The two alone had a brief exchange of insults before David was distracted by Faraday, whom he had incapacitated moments ago, being taken away by Trauma Team. Smasher would use this opportunity to shoot David in the stomach, causing him to briefly go cyberpsychopathic and activate his Sandevistan. Smasher responded by doing the same and fired a missile that directly hit the back of David's exoskeleton with enough force to eject the latter, Lucy, and Faraday (still strapped to Trauma Team's gurney) from Arasaka Tower, the latter of whom fell to his death. David managed to briefly escape with Lucy, only for Smasher to follow, crushing Rebecca to death in the process. Now inside Memorial Park, Falco attempted to slow Smasher down, but was simply crushed. David, on the verge of full cyberpsychosis, activated his Sandevistan again, but was shocked to see that Smasher could keep up with him, with the latter mocking that it was a "rudimentary implant". Lucy attempted to quickly hack Smasher, but this had little effect other than briefly annoying him before his cyberdeck burned out. Smasher was briefly distracted by trying to kill the escaping Lucy and Falco, which David used as an opportunity to immobilize the cyborg. An amused Smasher responded by ripping the anti-gravity devices off the exoskeleton, causing it to crumble under its own weight, and proceeded to pummel the now crippled David. After completely destroying the exoskeleton, Smasher stood over a limbless David, commenting

2077

In 2077, Adam was still Yorinobu's bodyguard. He usually accompanied him to the Konpeki Plaza penthouse, even scaring guests such as Evelyn Parker. [10] Several weeks later, while mercenaries V and Jackie Welles were conducting a heist on the Relic at the penthouse, Smasher accompanied Yorinobu when his father Saburo arrived to talk to him. Smasher and Saburo's bodyguard, Goro Takemura, left shortly before Yorinobu went berserk and strangled his father. Smasher attempted to stop the witnesses, V and Jackie, but they managed to escape before he could catch them. [11] Following Saburo's death, Yorinobu became Arasaka's CEO, promoting Smasher to head of security. During Saburo's memorial parade, Sandayu Oda warned Smasher that the parade was going to be sabotaged in an effort to harm Yorinobu's sister Hanako. Smasher ignored Oda's warnings, accusing him of disobeying Yorinobu while Oda persisted in questioning Smasher's actions. Oda was ultimately proven right: with V's help, Takemura gained access to Hanako's float in order to hijack her. Smasher then led an Arasaka strike team, personally rescued Hanako and ordered her kidnappers killed. [12][13]

Appearance
