Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley was a British SAS special forces operator, and a prominent member of Task Force 141 (so much so that he was given the position of second-in-command), known for his iconic Vera-patterned balaclava, headphones, and dark red sunglasses. By default, he wears a balaclava with an illustrated skull and sunglasses.

Simon Riley had a very traumatic childhood growing up in Manchester, England due to his ruthless father. Most days, his father would bring dangerous animals and tease them, even going so far as to force him to kiss a snake or threaten to kill him. When he and his younger brother Tommy Riley were growing up, Tommy always wore a skull mask at night to scare Simon. Simon's father sometimes took him to Bone Lickers concerts. At a concert, his father made him laugh about the death of a drug-addicted prostitute.

Simon used to be an apprentice butcher in a grocery store when he grew up. After the 9/11 attacks, he joined the military. He was an expert soldier who managed to join the Special Air Service.
