House

The House (Gray House) is the place where all the main events of the book take place. In fact, it is a boarding school for children, where they live and study. Everyone just calls this place "home". In fact, for the children themselves, it means much more than a temporary place of residence. The house is located on the outskirts of the city, among new buildings. This place is called "Combs", because of the white houses lined up in rows, like the teeth of a comb. There are vacant lots next to the high—rise buildings - the future teeth of the combs. It is between the destroyed and empty buildings of the same age and the new high-rise buildings that the House is located.The house has three floors. There are classrooms and living rooms, rest rooms, etc. A burial ground is attached to the House — a hospital wing.The pupils of the House are divided into groups, according to the rooms of residence. Each group has a tutor who monitors the activities and education of the children. The headmaster rules over the teachers. This is how it should be, and at first glance it is, but... In fact, the director is not the Head of the House, and educators rarely pay attention to their wards. The leaders are the main ones in the House. Each group has its own leader, who is the personification and, in some way, the collective image of all the inhabitants of his group. However, there is also the leader (Master) of the whole House, the Blind Man. He has power over all packs, and absolutely all pupils, including girls, listen to his words. Every person in the house has a nickname , and the person who gives the other a nickname is called the godfather.

Pupils

The main narrative is aimed specifically at the children who live in the House. The students are divided into groups, it is not known how the distribution goes. Each group belongs to a specific room of the House. Moreover, it is easy to understand which pack lives in it by the living conditions.The caregivers monitor the children's accommodation and studies. There is one teacher per group, but Ralph is assigned to two groups at once. He is the only one who tries to understand the philosophy of the residents of the House.

director

The director 's nickname is Shark . The shark is described as dry, spotted and shaggy, like a lichen-covered tree stump. His eyebrows, also mottled, gray, and shaggy, hang in dirty icicles over his eyes. The shark's mouth is oblique, and its eyes look in different directions. The pack

There are five packs in the house , each of which belongs to one room. Pheasants are the first group. Shark's pets. They are obsessed with cleanliness and order, imposing their ideas on any available mind. Although they are the director's favorite band, they are not respected among other packs. They are especially despised by logs. Rats are the second group. Noisy and bright, in the truest sense of the word. He differs from the others in his disregard for cleanliness, aggressiveness, and informal clothing. The leader is Red Birds are the third group. They are in eternal mourning after the death of the Shadow. They are characterized by a depressive state, as well as an incomprehensible love for indoor plants. The leader is a Vulture. The fourth is the fourth group. The only one has no animal name. The small size of the group is compensated by the names of its members. Almost all of them are respected people in the House. It is in the Fourth that the leader of the whole House, the Blind, lives. In the fourth live: Sphinx , Black, Jackal Tabaki, Macedonian, Blind, Smoker. Dogs are the sixth group. They dress as brightly as Rats, but with a great sense of style. Their room is never quiet. The leader is Pompey, later Black.

Humpback

Humpback is one of the participants of the Fourth. He is a bit of a musician, a bit of a poet, who leaves his poems on the walls above his bed; he loves animals more than people, collects cutlets from the canteen for stray dogs who follow him in whole packs. He's kind, and all the Foolish feel it just as well as the Blind Man who asked him for a favor on graduation day. Humpback is a man full of doubts and fears, but he never shows them to people, he hates conflicts and loves his companions too much to let them quarrel. He has six fingers and a big mouth, his eyebrows are fused at the bridge of his nose, and his black hair is always disheveled and looks like a crow's nest. He is sloppy in his clothes, does not change socks for a long time and is shy of blackheads on his nose. In the House, people like him are called angels because of the hump that looks like folded wings under their clothes.

Smoker

The smoker is a "were-pheasant" who settled in the fourth after the conflict with the members of the first group, and is the most "normal" inhabitant of it. Everything that was happening in the House seemed to the Smoker to be a game, trying on masks and roles that were constantly played by everyone who was in this place. He thought that no one understood him, and all the people around him were just going crazy with boredom and trying to have some fun.The house is a game, and the rules are much more brutal than he could have imagined. He found a like-minded person in the person of a Black man who always stood out from his peers and did not succumb to what looked like madness in the eyes of a Smoker. The Sphinx was also extremely important to the Smoker, who tried his best to teach him to listen to the House, understand it, ask the right questions and see what he could not see. The dragon lord of the fourth, who can move quickly and gracefully without a wheelchair. This indicates that he has mental disorders. As a result, he is short—tempered and irritable - at least until a visit to the Exterior. The Lord is a walker, and he, just like the Blind Man, prefers the "inside" of the House to reality. Long honey-colored hair, pale skin and gray eyes. The smoker compares him to the young Bowie and the elf king. However, despite his perfect appearance, the Lord does not consider himself handsome and diligently avoids mirrors. Macedonian

Macedonian is a pupil of the fourth group. One of the most mysterious inhabitants of the House and, at the same time, one of the most "local", according to the Jackal. The Macedonian possesses magic, the limits of which are not fully understood. He drives away bad dreams, controls objects around him, and can cause severe harm if desired. However, he rarely desires this.He has brown hair. Freckled. Eyes the color of tea with speckles. His build was thin, his fingers were long and bitten, and his front teeth were protruding. He wears a worn gray sweater that hides his hands. His voice is as soft as the rustle of rain.The Red Dragon is modest and shy. Prefers to stay in the shade.

blind

The blind is the leader of the fourth and the owner of the House. He's untidy. Blind by nature, but agile and extremely dangerous in one-on-one combat. A character, like everyone else, with a difficult fate and a too overwhelming and difficult entry into teenage life. He is short, skinny, very pale, with long black hair, which he periodically drapes over his face. Colorless (silver) eyes. Very long, mobile fingers. He wears sweaters (jumpers) — usually someone else's - and jeans with holes in the knees. He walks barefoot, which is why his feet are always dirty. Sometimes it is very difficult to determine his age by his appearance. One of the fangs is broken. It is not known for certain where the Blind Man grew up. However, according to his own memoirs, it can be understood that he spent his childhood in an institution where children with pathologies were brought up. Over time, conflicts began to occur between them, turning into fights. The blind man did not know what "seeing" was, but he quickly realized that those who could do it beat harder and won fights. It was then that he began to look for his strengths and found them in calmness and a cold mind. They began to be afraid of him.

Sphinx

The Sphinx is an armless giant, the caring mother of the Fourth. A fairly reputable person in the House – in the Smoker's opinion, he occupies the next step after the Blind in importance. In the past, he was nicknamed "The Grasshopper". Green-eyed and beardless, tall, wears prosthetics, which he calls a rake. Bald, looks older than his years. Black

Black is the "white crow" of the fourth. He is estranged from the traditions and concepts of the House, although he has been living in it for a long time; he does not understand the fear of his colleagues from the Outside. He looks very heavy and has remained like this since childhood, and at the time of the first volume, he is even more impressive because of the simulators. Moreover, not only the participants of the Fourth, but the whole House. The leader of the fourth is Blind. It is enough for the rest to know how Pale will react in order to maintain order in the group. That is why a Blind person rarely resolves minor conflicts – his colleagues are well aware that he may not like it, and try not to bring everything to his intervention. The tutor of the fourth is Ralph. The room in which the pupils of the Fourth live is a small room with an entrance hall. The walls of the room are hung with various household items, bundles of dried plants, posters and paintings. The ceiling is also not empty. However, despite all this diversity, it is impossible to find clocks and calendars in the Fourth. In the middle of the room there is a large central bed made up of four ordinary beds. Smoker, Lord, Tabaki and Sphinx spend the night here. Due to the physical characteristics of the pupils, as well as because of the Jackal's habit of building a "nest" of blankets, there is barely enough space on the bed. People sleep on it, have lunch, and pass through it to the other ends of the room. The light in the Fourth room is always on, just as the tape recorder always works. Jackal Tobacco

The Blind Man and the Sphinx also always preferred to turn to the Jackal when someone needed an explanation of the situation, although the Blind Man still tried to limit the narrator to the number of words or sentences so that his stories would not drag on for a very long time. red

Ralph
