Before becoming the famous leader of the Decepticons, D-16 was a gearless Transformer on Cybertron. Although he had a menial role, he followed the rules and respected his superiors. He admired Megatronus Prime and respected the current leader, Sentinel Prime. During his work, he met his best friend, Orion Pax, who was more adventurous and often needed D-16's help to get out of trouble. D-16 joined Orion and others on a secret trip to the surface to investigate a distress call from Alpha Trion, a dead Prime. This trip would change D-16's life. Alpha Trion revealed to them that Sentinel had betrayed the Primes and was removing the gears from Cybertronians at birth to keep them under control. He gave them gears to change the world. The truth affected D-16 deeply, causing him to rage against Sentinel. He attempted to kill him and tried to convince the High Guard to do the same, but they were captured. D-16 refused to submit and, after being freed by Orion, accidentally attacked and killed him. Enraged, D-16 killed Sentinel and was reborn as Megatron. He later gathered followers to fight Iacon, but was stopped by Orion, now Optimus Prime, who banished him. Megatron promised to return and form the Decepticons to fight Cybertron's leaders.
