In this world 80% of the population has supernatural power and 20% are people without powers. In the story of My Hero Academia, heroes and villains originated from a phenomenon that caused 80% of the population to develop "singularities." This resulted in the emergence of heroes who protect the world from villains.

Quirks are genetically inherited through what appears to be Mendelian inheritance, and typically manifest in children by the age of four at the latest. Children will either manifest one of their parents' Quirks or a new Quirk composed of a fusion of the two. Quirks originated sometime in the 20th or early 21st centuries and have existed for four generations. They were originally referred to as Meta Abilities. The first documented Quirk user was Glowing Baby, followed by All For One, who stole his mother's Meta Ability and killed her. Quirks evolve with humans and society. A Quirk is a special, superhuman ability that an individual can possess.
