Fern (フェルン, Ferun?) is a young human mage, and accompanies Frieren as his apprentice and party member. She is an orphaned war refugee originally from the Southern Lands, later adopted by Heiter and placed under Frieren's care after his death. Fern is a young human girl with purple eyes and waist-length purple hair with bangs. She usually wears her hair down with two additional chest-length locks framing her face in a hime-style haircut and partially tied back. After turning sixteen, Fern grew to be taller than Frieren and with a more developed figure. [6] [11] As a result of her mature and calm personality, she frequently has a stoic expression and rarely expresses strong emotions. Her facial features are characteristic of those of the Southern Lands. [12] During her travels with Frieren, Fern typically wears a long, white button-down dress with a Victorian top, which includes a ruffled collar and puffed white sleeves, along with black boots. When outdoors, she also dons a long, black, hooded coat, which has a grey undercoat. For Fern's sixteenth birthday, Frieren gifted her a butterfly-shaped hair ornament, which Fern regularly wears on the back of her head to partially tie her hair back. [6] Fern also frequently wears a mirrored lotus bracelet on her left wrist, given to her by Stark for her eighteenth birthday.

Fern has a mature personality as a result of her upbringing, leading her to often act as the mother of the party. She constantly has to help Frieren perform ordinary tasks, such as waking her up due to her being a deep sleeper, feeding and dressing her,[2] as well as cleaning up her messes.[3][4] She acts similarly towards Stark, such as getting angry when he stays up late, despite them being roughly the same age. Despite her motherly nature, Fern is easily angered and can act childish when others do not cater to what she wants or offend her, and in extreme cases, she will pout and completely ignore others when they try to reconcile,[5] though this can be resolved through actions such as treating her to food and complying with demands she makes. He also has a habit of following and observing others when he is suspicious or curious about them rather than confronting them directly, as seen when he stalks Frieren after suspecting him of making poor financial decisions[6][7] and investigates Stark when he struggles to find a suitable birthday present for him.[8] Fern is also a very loyal apprentice and has the discipline to train incredibly hard from a young age in order to be able to fend for herself, eventually becoming a powerful mage acknowledged by Frieren. She rarely cracks under pressure and is able to remain calm in combat despite receiving injuries and fighting opponents who are more powerful or experienced than her. Her devotion to learning magic stems from the loss of her parents at a young age and her subsequent adoption by Heiter; after nearly giving up after her parents' death, she was stopped by the priest, who advised her to stay alive in order to maintain the good memories she had. As a result, she became extremely dedicated with maturity to learning magic.
