At some point in his life, Sartorius lost his father to cancer. He became a scientist in Gotham City. He then met and married Parvin, a woman from a country that was under an oppressed regime. Together, they eventually had a son. During his research into curing cancer through nuclear fusion, Sartorius began working for notorious crime lord Rupert Thorne and his gang in order to gain funding from them. Parvin disagreed with his arrangement with the crime lord, believing them to be terrible people. She eventually persuaded Sartorius to falsify the research he gave to Thorne, sensitive to helping Bialya, a country under an oppressive government similar to her own. Sartorius agreed to her pleas, but Thorne and his gang discovered the falsity of the data and murdered Parvin and her son as an act of punishment. Some time later, Sartorius returned home to the horrific sight of the lifeless bodies of his wife and son. Overcome with grief, Sartorius collapsed in anguish, sobbing as he looked at the bodies of his family. As he sobbed, Thorne and his men entered the house. Thorne ordered his men to frame him for the murder, then inhumanly forced him to touch the bloodied bodies of his family, as well as the knife Thorne had used to commit the act. After being kidnapped by Thorne, Sartorius was forcibly taken by the gang to his own laboratory. There, Thorne's men searched through his files until they found the file on his nuclear fusion research. Sartorius was then interrogated by Thorne about the falsified statistics and research, as well as how stupid he was to believe he could fool Thorne. Desperate to save himself, Sartorius attempted to reason with Throne, explaining that his wife was deeply troubled by the idea of ​​aiding an oppressive regime.

Thorne's men laughed and jeered cruelly as Sartorius was pushed into the machinery, his body being consumed by its searing heat. But, instead of dying, Sartorius underwent an extreme transformation, becoming a radioactive metahuman. A vengeful Sartorius infiltrated Rupert Thorne's mansion, first murdering his doorman, then entering to greet Thorne and his family. Sartorius murdered Thorne along with his wife and children in cold blood, which was then reported on by the Gotham City News the following night. From there, Sartorius tracked down Thorne's men, individually murdering one of his affiliates by strangling him to death in a grocery store, another who Sartorius holds by the feet on the rooftop, disintegrating them until he falls to his death, and a third who is bound and gagged to a couch while watching the news of Thorne's murder, who Sartorius proceeds to incinerate along with burning down his house. Phosphorus took over Thorne's empire, inheriting his wealth, various assets, and commanding his gang. His henchmen began wearing skull-themed face paint to fit Phosphorus' aesthetic, and would accompany him in such makeup during his operations, such as when they clashed with another gang on the streets of Gotham and engaged in a shootout.
