Nami (ナミ Nami?, also known as Nami the Thief), is a fictional character from the manga and anime One Piece created by Eiichiro Oda. Nami is introduced in the narrative as an opportunistic ally of the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy but has noble motives behind her ambiguous actions. After Luffy helps her resolve her personal affairs by defeating the merman Arlong, Nami officially joins his crew of the Straw Hat Pirates where she acts as a navigator thanks to her knowledge of meteorology. Nami has a dream, like her companions, and aims to map the first world map. When necessary, she fights using her Bō staff that is capable of controlling the weather. Nami is known for having a great sense of fashion and constantly changing her clothes, setting her apart from other characters who have standard attire. When she is first introduced, she wears a white shirt with blue stripes and an orange miniskirt with two white rings drawn on it.[11] Two years later, in the narrative progression, she appears wearing a green bikini with white stripes, jeans, and constantly wears white earrings.[12] Nami begins the story with short hair and grows it until it almost reaches her waist.[12] She keeps the Log Pose compass attached to her left wrist to navigate. Nami is primarily characterized as greedy.[15] She was a professional thief, and even when she abandoned her thieving habits, she remained more interested in missions that would bring her profit. Her obsession with money stems from the financial conditions she faced as a child and the constant taxation that the villain Arlong imposed on her city.[16] Her greed is often used for comedic effect within the series, as is her cowardly side when facing very powerful enemies and monsters. Although she is a lover of money and treasure, Nami does not let her greed come before her appreciation for life.
