He was.

In several episodes, it is implied that Dan had a horrible, abusive childhood; according to the episode "Dan", Dan's childhood was so horrible that even Elise's enemy reprogramming therapist became mentally scarred by Dan's stories. In "Baseball", he reveals that he did not learn how to tie his shoes until he was twelve. His parents seemed to have been quite neglectful of his well-being; in "The Dentist", it is revealed that the dentist even tricked Dan's parents into giving him a root canal before he had his permanent teeth. As a result of their neglect, Dan claims to have been raised by television, and claims that he turned out to be "superduper". Most of his horrible experiences with his parents have caused Dan to become odd at communicating his affectionate feelings and poor at social skills when having to deal with any sort of loving reaction. It may also be due to his parents, relatives, bad family relationships, or how he was raised poorly in his childhood, any or all of them being possible causes as to why Dan cannot trust many people well and also has poor social and communication skills in such areas. Dan has also mentioned that his parents divorced when he was very young and that he has not seen his father since. In "Summer Camp", his parents dropped him off at Camp Atrocious, which, according to Chris, "was even worse than its name", however, Dan fondly remembered it for his revenge against the ruthless counselor and bullies, and also because it is where he met and befriended Chris. In "The High School Reunion" it is revealed that Dan was incredibly popular in high school, as everyone loved his crazy revenge antics, but he never realized it.

Main Plot.

The show is about a man named Dan, who believes that the world is against him and often goes on revenge missions to "destroy" whoever or whatever has wronged him (the wrong often involving things happening to Dan's beloved but often misused car). Accompanying him on his revenge missions is his harassed friend, Chris, who can't help but go along with Dan's crazy schemes for revenge despite how ridiculous they may seem.

The list.

Dan's Revenge List is a journal filled with the many things that have upset or wronged Dan in some way. He is usually seen writing down minor annoyances while he is busy getting revenge for something else.

About...

Dan is a hot-tempered man who is on a mission to seek revenge on anyone he believes has wronged him. Although he displays a very superficial and aggressive demeanor, he is actually overly burdened by stress and becomes overly sensitive to everyday annoyances. Whether it is his low standard of living, due to not having a job, or a horrible and terrifying childhood, he has been clearly seen to be unable to overcome this aggravated stress. In stark contrast to how a normal, comfortable person might deal with things, he takes matters into his own hands and his solutions vary from aggression to outright endangerment (which explains his extensive criminal record), once he decides he can no longer contain his anger. He also sets out to apply any methods necessary to stop the cause of this three-pronged turmoil (on him or sometimes on the whole society) through his "revenge missions." Dan takes things he considers low-level (such as Ninja Dave, anything on Dan's list, misbehaving children, Chris, etc.) impersonally, while taking higher-level instigations (such as balloon cultists, demon bosses, abusive summer camp directors, extortionist bully children, werewolves, etc.) very personally. He believes the entire world is against him, which is true most of the time. He will stop at nothing to ensure a score is settled, even if his victory is worthless, if it costs him more than he gets out of it. He can come across as selfish and seem like he doesn't care what happens to others, though he is also known for hiding his true feelings and is reluctant to admit them (Burgerphile, The Animal Shelter, Parents, The Family Thanksgiving, and The Family Cruise). He also has poor communication skills towards other people in tender moments, so he sometimes has trouble admitting his true feelings.

Appearance.

Dan has messy black hair, green eyes, a scruffy beard, a soul patch, and shark teeth. His everyday attire consists of blue jeans, black ankle boots, and a black t-shirt that says "JERK" in white letters.

Personality 1.

Dan is a very short-tempered man, who can and does get enraged by almost anything that... well... anything, actually. He has very bad luck with anything mechanical and can accidentally cause major damage. He is very comical and childish, Chris often referring to him as a "big boy". Always being in a state of unemployment and living a poor life causes Dan to rightly get enraged by things that cause him additional pain. In many of his "missions", he is surprisingly often right in his outlandish assumptions. He can also be very sensitive, both in the negative and positive sense of the word. He can also be very harsh, both in the negative and positive sense, but the latter is only seen on rare occasions (e.g. "Summer Camp" and "Chris"). Even with his rash behavior, Dan does have a sense of morality and will occasionally do the right thing. Examples include saving all the animals at the shelter before blowing it up, refusing to backstab his friend Chris, and let's not forget his undying adoration for his scruffy kitty Mr. Mumbles. Dan secretly has a strongly compassionate side where he is willing to rescue Elise, Chris, and Elise's hated parents. He generally has a fake demeanor which he shows a lot on the show - he doesn't care about anyone but himself (and Chris a bit), but he hides his true feelings which he finds out whenever he is around Mr. Mumbles. He told Hortense in Burgerphile to do what she wanted to do, because she helped him with his strike. He started a relationship with her, but they broke it off when she was promoted and had to move away. He even charmed three girls into liking him, though all of these relationships were short-lived, one of them has even used him in her own revenge schemes. He seemed saddened by this, but recovered each time in the next episode.

Personality 2.

He is very fond of his car, even though it is in very bad condition. In fact, many of his revenge attacks have been due to someone severely vandalizing his car, whether intentionally or not. He has said that he loves his car and that if he has grandchildren he will sell it to them. He is a great admirer of Shakespeare, even his teddy bear is called Brutus. He also demonstrates a broad knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and the English language in general, which is reflected in his use of unusually erudite terminology and his correction of other people's expressions. Although Dan appears cold and unfeeling, he has a sensitive side that is rarely seen. In "Wedding," when he found out that Hortence was getting married, he seemed to be on the verge of tears. His despair quickly turned to rage, but it was clear that he was still devastated inside. He has a lot of difficulty expressing emotions other than anger and outrage, and even doing so is on his list. He couldn't tell Hortence that he loved her, and instead said that he "felt very fond of her." Dan is a born leader, as seen in "The Fancy Restaurant", where he and Elise start a French food revolution amongst the cooks and the dungeon people. Chris has also stated that Dan has a terrible memory: "He's like an angry goldfish" (the goldfish can only remember the last eight seconds). According to Chris in "George Washington", "He has a very strange mosaic of knowledge - no one knows what he knows about any given subject." He later demonstrated this by asking Dan who carved Mount Rushmore and where it is located. Dan knew who carved it, but he didn't know what state it was in. He has been shown to be very knowledgeable about many things, but also ignorant of many others. While he may be ignorant about some things, Dan is very persistent, which can be both a good and a bad thing.

Personality 3.

Dan has shown to have a kind-hearted side that he was unable to develop during childhood. It is heard in several comments and in conversations with Chris that Dan's parents were extremely harsh on him while he was growing up. He has stated that most of his life has been spent in front of the television because his parents neglected him a lot, thus he was "raised by television" during his childhood. Due to his parents' conscious or unconscious awareness in his upbringing, Dan was subjected to many unfortunate experiences while growing up. The first part of Dan's backstory is seen in the episode Summer Camp, and hints of what his childhood was like have been mentioned on several occasions. Depending on the situation, Dan can be the protagonist or the antagonist.

Relationships 1:

Christopher: Chris is Dan's only true friend and their bond was formed when they were forced to attend "Camp Atrocity" as children. Their relationship as best friends was solidified when they teamed up with the other kids to take down an abusive camp director who was running the camp. This could explain why Chris puts up with Dan's antics throughout the series. Although he generally treats Chris poorly, he has shown that he cares for him and has helped him a few times, albeit seemingly reluctantly.

Relationships 2.

Mr. Mumbles: Dan meets Mr. Mumbles Dan loves his cat, Mr. Mumbles, and because of their friendship, Mr. Mumbles acts as a calming presence in his angry outbursts, while Dan acts as a calm, excited force, unable to get angry when he's around Mr. Mumbles and his adorable cuteness. Dan will stop at nothing to protect and dote on his feline (such as helping him escape the cruise ship in The Family Cruise). Dan met Mr. Mumbles during another one of his revenge missions against an animal shelter. He was determined to blow up the shelter and every living thing in it (including the animals), until he first saw Mr. Mumbles and all his cuteness. Dan tried to ignore her, but gave in and freed her, along with the other animals. Dan at first called her "Mumbles", but soon began calling her Mr. Mumbles, not knowing her gender at the time, it wasn't until Art that Dan learned of Mr. Mumbles's actual gender, thanks to a homeless man who was helping them in their crusade against Art and Art Artstien, but even after learning this, he still refers to her as "Mr. Mumbles".

Relationships 3.

Elise: They've never had the best relationship, always fighting, arguing, or bickering with each other in some way. They have their rare moments of kindness towards each other (George Washington, Technology) and even bonded somehow after getting stuck during a snowstorm in The Ski Trip. Dan seems to blame Elise for pushing Chris away from him, as some characters (including himself) have said that he wasn't very positive during their wedding and even listed reasons why their marriage wouldn't last long. There have been times where he acts as if Elise has already moved on from Chris (The Mummy). It seems very apparent that he considers their entire marriage to be a mistake. Every time Elise has a gun that Dan wants, Dan wants to play with it. However, Dan is unable to get Elise's guns.

Relationships 4.

Ted: Not much is known about Ted except that he was Dan's only friend besides Chris. Ted has not appeared in the series, but he has been mentioned, especially in earlier episodes of Season 1. During Dan's plan against The Wolfman, Chris suggests that Dan should ask Ted to help him, but Dan says that Ted isn't talking to him currently, implying that Dan did something to cause a rift between the two.

Relationships 5.

Elise's parents: Dan despises Don and Elise Sr., as they interfere with Chris's time and Dan's missions. Don and Elise Sr. hate Dan, mainly for his hostile schemes, immaturity, and for putting them in danger at times (e.g. "Elise's Parents"). In "The Family Thanksgiving", both parents invite him to make their deviled eggs recipe, while being unusually friendly towards Dan, but it is later revealed that they used him to steal their recipe, leading Dan to burn down their house out of betrayal. In "Chris", Dan and Elise's parents develop an ally-type relationship with him when they learn that Dan wanted to get revenge on Chris, whom Elise's parents greatly dislike.

Relationships 6.

Dennis: In Parents, Dan wanted to adopt a child to prove that he could raise a child better than most idiot parents these days, when he met Dennis at an orphanage, they hit it off instantly and Dan liked him, but the Goodhills had already adopted him and were going to raise him in their place. Dan decided to have a competition to see who liked Dennis the most and the Goodhills and Dan spent a day with him each. Dennis eventually liked Dan the most, but despite this, Dan was not allowed to have him anyway due to his questionable history (being arrested, constantly moving to different places, etc.) Dan told Dennis in his last interaction with him to make sure to rob the Goodhills whenever he got the chance, and Dennis told him he would.

Relationships 7.

Hortence: At some point during the beginning of Season 1, Dan had developed a crush on Hortence, which would reach its peak in "Burgerphile" when Hortence helped Dan stand up for himself during a protest when Jeff messed up his order (he put cheese on Dan's burger). Hortence even started to consider herself Dan's "girlfriend" during the protest. After Jeremiah Burger went to clean up the mess at Burgerphile, he promoted Hortence to regional manager, resulting in her having to move 20 miles away from Dan. (Despite being only 20 miles away, Dan never came to visit her.) Dan thought he would never see her again, but she returned in "The Wedding" to announce that she was marrying Mr. Burger, much to Dan's frustration and sadness. Dan attempted to sabotage the couple's wedding, which, unsurprisingly, went horribly wrong. In the end, Hortence ended up moving even further away and said goodbye to Dan in a bittersweet way. She has never returned to the series since.

Relationships 8.

Prescott Richman IV: In "Golf", when Dan was trying to stop Chris from playing golf properly, he vandalized a locker room and signed Chris' name to incriminate him, but before he could finish it, Prescott caught him and asked Dan to explain himself. Dan claimed that he was trying to fix the vandalism and give him a positive message. Prescott believed him and said that his butler Nigel could take care of it. Soon, Dan and Prescott became friends. They would get massages together and relax in a hot tub while women brought them food. Dan was even considering replacing Chris with Prescott... but then he discovered that Prescott doesn't like cats and likes dogs better. Dan quickly dumped him and resumed his mission to stop Chris from playing golf. But he later used Prescott again to convince Chris that he liked golf and would not compete in the golf tournament in order to sabotage it.

Family.

Not much is known about Dan's relatives other than the fact that he had a grandmother, the various hints about his mother and father, and hints about his childhood. It is implied or outright shown that Dan has poor relationships with his grandmother, his mother, and possibly his father. Dan's parents are divorced, possibly due to their negative ways of raising children, either by one or both adults. The most recent known living condition of a family member is Dan's grandmother, as he spoke to her on the phone in Dan vs. the Dentist, but she has apparently since died. Dan claimed to have stolen her deviled eggs recipe on her deathbed, before she could take it to the grave. At the beginning of Baseball, he was driving home from a funeral, and considering the timeline of the episodes, it was most likely for his grandmother. Dan also has a dead, successfully wealthy uncle, as mentioned in Golf. Dan has previously dug up his grave to steal his uncle's suit. Dan briefly mentions his grandfather in Vegetables, stating that he lived to be 108. Dan has also mentioned his mother on a few occasions, with all comments referring to a negative memory of her. There are rare occasions where Dan's mother appears on the show, such as when Dan said, "Those were a gift from my mother! How dare you confiscate them?", in which Dan's mother had gifted him some brass knuckles (The Wolfman). However, his opinion of his mother is not very positive, as seeing the word "mom" on screen in Anger Management caused a rather hostile reaction in him. He also implied that his mother was forcefully distant and apathetic towards him and his needs, as at age five he was tricked into having a root canal in "The Dentist", he did not learn to tie his shoes due to not being taught properly as a child.

The list.

Every so often, something irritates Dan while he's in the middle of getting revenge on someone else. This causes Dan to pull out a notepad and write the offending item on his list of things to get revenge on later. (The list includes: babies crying in the park, babies in general, general, dull pencils, overly sharpened pencils, banana slugs, Costa Rica, neurotoxins, alpaca wool, being forced to express his feelings, and Arizona.) In "The Animal Shelter," Dan adds Burger Phile after accidentally drinking Chris's milkshake there. Later in the season, an entire episode revolves around Dan's revenge against the fast food restaurant. In "Neighbors", Dan is shown to bear a resemblance to his neighbor Jason, as they both carry shorthand notebooks with them to write down unruly items that bother them. On rare occasions, Dan deletes a turmoil. In "The Telemarketer", Dan adds Elise to the list when she makes him angry and the two almost end up in a fight. However, Dan deletes her after seeing her mercilessly beat up Chris's former boss, Mr. Zimmerman.

Alter egos 1.

The bat boy: The batter boy - baseball: Batboy is Dan's superhero alter ego in the episode "Baseball". A childish and humorously sinister salute to Batman, Batboy is shown always cloaked in his cape, mysteriously brave and reserved about his missions. The Batboy persona never submits to his enemies (even when they tell him to get down on the ground when he's on fire), takes pride in his superhero name, and displays a comical mastery of gadgets. Used to try and get into the commissioners' box at the game, his Batboy ego failed when the costume caught fire after Dan mistakenly entered the women's bathroom. Batboy's costume consists of Dan's normal outfit, with underwear over his pants, a cape, and a black mask.

Alter egos 2.

Biff Wellington: Dan as Biff Wellington Biff Wellington is Dan's alter ego towards the end of the episode "Dan". Biff, who is somewhat the anti-Dan, is shown to be a gentle and kind spirit. However, Dan only staged the Biff persona when the fake Dan is taken to jail for missing a court appearance, which Dan hoped would get the impostor, with Dan's identity, into enough trouble that he would lose Dan's real identity.

Alter egos 3.

Evil temp Dan: Dan, the Evil Temp Worker, is another alter ego of Dan, first used to get rid of a demonic evil boss in the episode "Dan vs The Boss". A highly manipulative and super enraged form of Dan, who is shown to be cunning, psychologically manipulative of workers, and heavy-handed with labor rules and codes (no matter how ruthless or insensitive they are). Being closest to his female boss, Dan arranged for this alter ego to eventually betray his boss and send her back to the evil fire pit from which she was formed.

Alter egos 4.

DanMan: Dan Man is another superhero alter ego in "The Super Hero". When Terrifi-Guy wrecks Dan's car, Dan wants revenge and decides to prove that any idiot can save the day, so he recruits Chris (reluctantly) and Mr. Mumbles to help him and they dress up as superheroes. Dan Man has a grey, blue, and yellow suit with a giant "D" on the front, he also wears a blue mask.

Alter egos 5.

Jerk Doctor: Another alter ego used by Dan in "The Superhero", instead of a superhero, Dan is now a villain named Dr. Jerk. Dr. Jerk is just the Dan Man costume but with Dan's JERK shirt over it, a utility belt that holds a water gun, cell phone, gummy bears, and an egg beater, and he wears a non-functional jetpack on his back. The mask is also black instead of blue.

Trivia 1.

One of Dan's old friends is an unseen character named Ted, he has never appeared on the show, but is on Dan's list. Dan seems to have "Jerk" as his main iconography, as evidenced by his apron, his Dr. Jerk persona, and its use as a logo for when his car was modified into a battle robot. His left thumb is double-jointed, which is shown in "The Magician." Dan is lactose intolerant. Eating cheese, butter, or dairy products causes him to roll around on the floor, clutching his stomach in pain (although there is a brief part of "Baseball" where Dan is shown having a cheese sandwich). In "Baseball" and "The Bank", Dan mentions that he has been tear gassed so many times that it no longer affects him. He is also immune to pepper spray. Mr. Mumbles is a female cat, and Dan recognizes her as a girl. He named her before knowing her gender and didn't find out she was a girl until several episodes after he adopted her, but he still calls her Mr. Mumbles. Dan is attracted to men, as shown in "The Family Camping Trip", and has dismissed the idea of involving women in his love life in "Parents". Both of these things have sparked debate about his sexuality. He is likely bisexual, as he has shown some heterosexual attraction to Honey and Amber. In "Elise's Parents", Don reveals that Dan was Chris's best man at Chris and Elise's wedding saying, "I remember his best man toast where he told us that marriage is a scam and that you and Elise Jr. were getting divorced within a year." In "Elise's Parents," Dan tells Elise that he has no dental records. A possible nod to "The Dentist," in which he stole his own records to prove that his dentist, Dr. Pullem, was a supervillain. In the episode "Dan", it is shown on his driver's license that Dan is 5'6" (1.68 m) tall, weighs 105 pounds (47 kg).

Trivia 2.

His license says his name is Dan, but somewhere in the series it states that his real name is Daniel. He says he weighs 105 pounds, which is considered thin according to BMI. Dan is likely heavier, as he is depicted as plus-sized in episodes such as "The Gym" and "The Lemonade Stand Gang." He says his eyes are brown, but they are actually green. Dan Mandel confirmed that Dan's birth date is incorrect, meaning he was likely born in 1985, the same year Chris was born, due to them being the same age during Camp Atrocious and high school. Mandel also confirmed that Dan's birthday is February 3rd.

Trivia 3.

Dan has stated that the police no longer respond to his calls. ("The Dentist") In "Ye Olde Shakespeare Dinner Theatre", Dan is shown to have an extensive knowledge and appreciation for the works of William Shakespeare, to the point of swearing vengeance against the eponymous dinner theatre for "sulking the works of the Immortal Bard". Dan appears to be a fan of The Ramones, as he has a poster of the band's logo hanging in his apartment. Dan is wanted by INTERPOL, as Elise stated in The High School Reunion. During the episode "The High School Reunion", it is revealed that Dan was incredibly popular in high school, as his classmates loved his revenge antics, but he never realized it. It is revealed in Summer Camp that Dan and Chris met when they were forced to attend a bad summer camp, Camp Atrocious, as children. The name Biff Wellington is a pun on the food "Beef Wellington". As seen on Reality TV, Dan knows Morse code. Dan likes clay pigeon shooting. Dan has drawings of an American soldier and German warplanes on the wall of his motel. Dan seems to be aware of the pattern in each episode: 1. He gets wronged in some way, 2. He yells out the name of his new enemy, 3. He embarks on his new misadventure. In the episode "Gigundo Mart", he learns that Ninja Dave's Cookies, his favorite cookie restaurant, is about to close due to not being able to compete with the titular megastore, and begins yelling, "GIGUNDO M--, oh wait, I already did that...", realizing that he's already sworn revenge.

Prompt
