The son of wealthy Muggle Tom Riddle Sr. and the witch Merope Gaunt, he was born of half-blood, his mother dying shortly after giving birth to him. Tom Riddle Sr. left his wife once she became pregnant, having been freed from the trance of a love potion that had been the sole cause of their relationship. Their son, Tom Riddle, was born and raised in a Muggle orphanage, although he was soon enrolled in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and sorted into Slytherin house in 1938. Tom Riddle was regarded throughout his early life as the most talented student ever to attend Hogwarts. To the school at large, he appeared to be a well-mannered and polite young man; However, Riddle actually exhibited cruelty, sadism, manipulation, sociopathy and megalomania. Having achieved excellence in every academic test presented, Riddle left Hogwarts in 1945 and shortly after attempted to apply for a job with Professor Dippet, who refused. However, due to Lily Potter's sacrifice of love, ancient magic, Voldemort's curse was diverted back to him and as a result his body was destroyed. Stripped of his power, Voldemort fled to a deserted forest in Albania to await the day when he could possess a body and regain his power. After thirteen years of waiting for the day he longed to come, and with the use of Potter's own blood, the Dark Lord rose again.

Although he initially remained hidden, Voldemort soon revealed himself, beginning a bloody reconquest of the wizarding world. After two years of constant warfare, Voldemort finally gained control of the Ministry of Magic, and ruled with little resistance save for a few opposing groups. Despite having taken over the country, Voldemort remained dissatisfied, as he must eliminate the danger posed to it by the prophecy. After discovering Potter's location, Voldemort ventured to definitively destroy the young man by launching all his forces into an assault on Hogwarts. Upon arriving at the school, Voldemort faced a full-scale rebellion composed of educators and students, as well as members of the Order of the Phoenix and residents of Hogsmeade. As the battle intensified, the Death Eaters were forced to retreat to the Great Hall, where Voldemort confronted Harry Potter in a duel, and, with all of his Horcruxes destroyed, Tom Marvolo Riddle was finally killed. Tom Ryddle's mutilated soul was confined to limbo for all eternity, unable to move or return as a ghost.
