Gale is a wizard prodigy whose love for a goddess made him attempt a dread feat no mortal should. Blighted by the forbidden magic of ancient Netheril, Gale strives to undo the corruption that is overtaking him and win back his goddess' favour before he becomes a destroyer of worlds.

In his youth, Gale was a prodigal practitioner of the Art. He likened his skill as a wizard to that of an actual artist, who manipulated the Weave in the same manner a virtuoso did music. After he was spurned by the goddess Mystra, Gale sought to win back her affection. He sought out an ancient "tome of gateways" that contained within it a portion of the Astral Plane, described as a "fragment of primal Weave locked out of time", separated from the former goddess of magic. He wanted to reunite Mystra with her missing piece of magic, but failed in his endeavor.

History

As a result of his failed labor of love, Gale's body became the host to a Netherese destruction orb. The orb would continuously beat, absorbing energy from the Weave, counting down to an ultimate destruction that was capable of tearing down cities.[1] Unknown to him, the orb did indeed contain a piece of ancient Weave—but it was the Weave of Karsus, which still sought to supplant the original Weave as its maker once intended. The orb could only be stabilized by allowing it to break down parts of the Weave around it, and as it began by draining Gale's own connection to the Weave he found his magical abilities greatly weakened. In the Year of Three Ships Sailing, 1492 DR, Gale was taken prisoner by illithids upon a nautiloid. A mind flayer tadpole was inserted into him through his eye, an act that would normally begin the process of ceremorphosis. However, the spelljammer was taken down by a host of devils and crashed into the Sword Coast, on the northern bank of the River Chionthar. Rather than become a mind flayer himself, Gale was granted limited psychic powers, akin to those others referred to as True Souls of the Absolute. He soon met up with another passenger of the ship, who shared his mysterious new power.

History

From a young age, Gale was a prodigy with magic, manipulating magic like a skilled virtuoso plays music. He apparently conjured rabbits as a toddler, and at the age of ten, he summoned a tressym, Tara, after his parents refused to get him a kitten. Gale's talent eventually drew the attention of the Goddess of Magic, Mystra, who made him one of her Chosen. Mystra became a teacher, muse, and eventually lover to Gale. Gale, longing to impress his Goddess, begged her to give him access to forbidden levels of magic, which she repeatedly refused. He sought out a tome containing a scrap of Netherese Weave, hoping to impress Mystra by returning it to her. However, when he opened the book, something shot from the book into his chest, and his body became an unwitting host to an extremely destructive Netherese orb. To keep the orb inhabiting and corrupting his body in check, Gale must continually sate it with powerful magical artefacts - if he fails, the orb will detonate, bearing enough destructive power to bring down even whole cities, and Gale with them. As a punishment for his hubris, Gale lost his position as Chosen, and Mystra ceased contact with him. Prior to his abduction by mind flayers, Gale lived in a tower in Waterdeep. He and Tara spent most of their time locating magic items for him to consume. After his abandonment by Mystra, Gale became something of a recluse, and describes himself as having few friends. At some point, Gale was mentored by Elminster, who acts as Gale's friend and as a parental figure.

History

Gale is an intelligent, thoughtful wizard, with a good-hearted and peaceful nature. He has a scholarly, slightly pompous speaking style. He speaks openly about himself when asked, describing himself as a "wizard of some renown" who enjoys good wine and ocasionally writing poetry. He frequently shares anecdotes from his youth or his career as a wizard. Like Karlach and Wyll, he generally approves of the player's good-aligned choices. After you two progress in your adventure and discover the crown of Karsus. Gale becomes fascinated by the existence of the Crown of Karsus, and shows an obsessive, power-hungry side to his personality. Depending on the player's choices, he either regrets his hubris and makes a commitment to become more humble, or decides to reforge the crown and use it to ascend to godlike status, using his new powers to help people.
