He was the last male blue macaw to exist since Marcel and the smugglers he leads drove the rest of them extinct. To do so, he was raised by a woman named Linda Gunderson in Moose Lake, Minnesota, for fifteen years. While he is capable of doing acrobatics as a means of transportation (as revealed in a set of rings and in a cabin in the jungle), drinking from a cup, dunking things, reading, using a pencil, and has the intelligence of a human, he cannot fly. It is not until the end that he is truly a hero, nor is it until then that he achieves his flight.

Shy, socially awkward, cowardly, and smart, Blu says things that are the last thing on his mind and may even make you laugh. Sometimes he can't express himself very well or his feelings. But if the girl of his dreams is in trouble, he'll risk everything to save her, even if it costs him his life (he jumps out of the plane for Pearl, knowing full well that he would probably die). He's unique and proud of it. Despite being clumsy, unable to express himself, and even a little awkward with words, he is very kind-hearted, sweet, gorgeous, super smart, and because of his colorful courage and bravery, Blu will never give up on anything. Even when Nigel digs his claws deep into Blu's throat, he puts his own pain aside to focus on Pearl's broken wing. Blu is always organized and well prepared for travel, and prefers the easy option. He doesn't dare to venture into the wild, but he will do it for the sake of his family.

Gender: Male Species: Spix's Macaw Colors: Blue Eye color: Brown Family: Linda (owner), Perla (wife), Eduardo (father-in-law), Carla, Bia and Thiago Nationality: United States formerly Brazil Bonus fact: Birds have a cloaca, or a single entrance and exit for sperm, eggs, and waste. The male deposits sperm directly into the female's cloaca. The sperm fertilizes the egg. A hard-shelled egg then develops inside the female.

Tulio speculated that Blu was the last male of his species. Blu is shy and socially awkward. He is certainly the opposite of his mate, Jewel. While he can use a computer, open cages, and ride a skateboard, he has one problem: he can't fly. When he found the girl of his dreams, he was forced to put his fears aside and find out if he really had what it took to soar.

Blu was first seen as a chick resting in his nest deep in the jungles of Rio de Janeiro. As Blu was preparing to learn to fly, a group of smugglers began kidnapping all the birds in the jungle, including Blu. However, the box they were carrying Blu accidentally fell off a truck while in Moose Lake, Minnesota. The box was found by a young girl named Linda, who agreed to take care of him, naming him "Blu." Over the next fifteen years, Linda and Blu became the best of friends, with Blu standing by her side during her birthday parties, spelling bees, and even her high school graduation party. One day, an ornithologist named Julio/Tulio comes to the bookstore where Blu and Linda lived and informs them that Blu is the last male of his species and that he must travel to Rio de Janeiro and mate with the last remaining female in order to save his species. Blu and Linda are reluctant at first, but eventually agree. When they arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Blu meets Pedro and Nico, who give him some advice on how to attract females. Once at Julio's aviary, Blu is put into Pearl's cage and when he sees her, he immediately falls in love with her and attempts to kiss her, however, Pearl was only interested in escaping and gets upset with Blu for trying to kiss her since they barely knew each other. Later, the two are captured by a boy named Fernando, who takes them to the hideout of some illegal bird traffickers, Marcel, Tipa, and Armando, with the help of the poacher's pet, Pepillo/Nigel. Blu and Pearl are chained together and caged, but manage to escape the cage. When Pearl attempts to fly away, Blu admits to Pearl that he can't fly and they are forced to escape from the poachers and Pepillo/Nigel on foot, but eventually manage to lose them and hide in the jungle.

In the morning, Blu tries to devise a way to break the chain, but fails. They are then attacked by a flock of baby toucans, whose father, Rafael, offers to take them to Luiz to get rid of the chain. Rafael also tries to help Blu learn to fly, telling him that he just needs to feel the rhythm of his heart, but Blu, frightened, falls short at the last moment, causing himself and Pearl to fall off the cliff onto a hang glider. Blu, enjoying the feeling of being in the air, opens his wings, causing himself and Pearl to once again fall through the air until they finally land on a beach near the market where he is reunited with Pedro and Nico, who inform the group that they had missed the tram that would take them to Luiz. While waiting, Pedro and Nico take the group to the bird samba club. Once there, Blu, remembering his childhood moments as he hears the rhythm of the music, begins to dance. With a little push from Rafael, Blu dances with Pearl until the party is interrupted by some marmosets who had been sent by Pepillo/Nigel to capture the macaws. A brief battle ensues in which the birds emerge victorious. Later, the tram arrives and Blu and Pearl are helped by Kipo to get to the tram. During their ride on the tram, Blu, with the help of the others, tries to woo Pearl with flattery but is impeded by a flower petal that he accidentally swallows and gets stuck in his throat. When they finally arrive, they are shocked to learn that Luiz is a bulldog, and even more shocked to see that he intends to use a saw to cut the chain. In the chaos, Luiz catches the chain in his mouth, causing his drool to lubricate the chain, thus freeing Blu and Pearl. Blu, knowing that he and Pearl would have to part ways, becomes saddened and has an argument with Pearl that leads to them both going their separate ways without each other.

However, when he learns that Pearl has been captured by Pepillo/Nigel, Blu quickly runs to rescue her along with the others. Blu and company follow Pepillo/Nigel to the carnival where Blu finds Linda but decides to help Pearl first. Once he finds her, he tries to set her free, but is caged by Pepillo/Nigel, along with Rafael, Pedro and Nico. They are then taken to a small plane by the poachers, along with all the other captured birds. While on the plane, Blu manages to escape by using a fire extinguisher to open the cage and immediately freeing the rest of the birds. Blu opens the hatch of the plane allowing all the birds to flee, however, Blu stays on the plane as he is still afraid of flying and Pearl stays with him to encourage him. At that moment Pepillo/Nigel attacks Blu and Pearl tries to save him but is knocked into the side of the plane, causing a cage to fall on her wing, injuring her. As Pepillo/Nigel taunts him, Blu becomes enraged and traps Pepillo/Nigel's leg in a rubber band attached to the fire extinguisher before letting go, forcing Pepillo/Nigel to be thrown out of the plane and caught in one of its propellers, causing the plane to crash. Pearl falls out of the plane and Blu, putting aside his fears, jumps in after her. After telling her that he wouldn't let her go, Blu is kissed by Pearl, which gives Blu enough motivation to spread his wings and fly away, saving himself and Pearl. Flying towards Linda, Julio/Tulio and Fernando, Blu convinces Pearl to let Julio/Tulio help her. After healing Pearl's wing, Blu says goodbye to Linda and leaves with Pearl into the wild. In the final scene, Blu and Pearl are now parents to three chicks and are seen flying and singing in their new home in the jungle.

A few years after the first film, Blu, Perla, and their three children, Carla, Bia, and Tiago, live a perfect domesticated life in the magical city of Rio de Janeiro. Blu is still as domesticated as ever, reveling in the comforts of modern life. A perfect day for him is making pancakes for Perla and his three children and plopping down on the couch to watch a soccer game. He is definitely in his comfort zone, living large and like a human being. However, Perla worries that the children are more like humans than birds and that they may never know how to be birds. When Linda and Tulio discover that there might be more Spix's Macaws deep in the Amazon, Blu reluctantly agrees to take a short trip to help find them. Blu tells his friends of his travel plans, but Nico, Pedro, and Luiz warn him of the countless dangers that could await in the wild. But the ever-positive Rafael cheers Blu up, reminding him that "a happy wife means a happy life!" Blu thought the city of Rio was wild, but he didn't experience the true meaning of wild until he traveled to the Amazon. He's a little reluctant to make the trip and isn't comfortable with it, but he'll do it for the sake of his family. After all, what could possibly go wrong on a family vacation?

Before they can begin their journey, Blu has to prepare himself and his family for the trip. To do this, Blu enlists the help of a GPS device (much to Perla's frustration), to help them navigate Brazil. When they arrive in Manaus, they hitch a ride on a riverboat and take a much-needed break from the flight. During the trip through the Amazon, Pearl notices that Blu is still undecided about the adventure. She decides to cheer him up by thanking him for coming. Upon arrival at Blu's scheduled destination, Blu and Pearl meet up with the locals at the Amazon sanctuary, where they discover, to everyone's surprise, especially Pearl's, that the leader of the lost flock of blue macaws is Pearl's father, Eduardo. Initially grateful that Blu has brought Pearl back into Eduardo's life, the stern patriarch quickly turns into a disapproving father-in-law. Eduardo is very strict with Blu and is unhappy that he has so many ties to humans and human things, such as his ever-present fanny pack and GPS system. As the family adjusts to this exciting new world, Blu finds that his learning curve is steep. He is unable to perform even the simplest and most important tasks, such as building a nest and foraging for food. Not only does Blu feel out of place in the jungle, he feels out of place with this entire flock of birds who share his DNA, but none of his lifestyle choices.

If meeting a critical father-in-law wasn't enough, Blu must also confront Roberto, Perla's childhood friend. Not only does Blu feel threatened by Roberto, but he's also frustrated that Roberto seems like the perfect guy. For Blu, the Amazon really feels like the most exotic or strange place a bird from Minnesota could find by way of Rio. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Blu, Pearl and their friends, their old enemy Nigel (who actually survived the plane's destruction but was rendered flightless as a result) is plotting revenge on them with his henchmen, Gabi the Frog and Charlie the Anteater. After some arduous "training" with Eduardo, Blu voices his concerns to Rafael, Pedro, and Nico, who tell him to calm down. As they talk, a masked Nigel walks past them. Because he's disguised, Blu doesn't recognize his old nemesis, and Nigel, now a bit into his new act, passes Blu without even noticing. Blu tries to make Pearl happy for fear that she will leave him, so he searches the jungle for a Brazil nut (her favorite) for her. But he accidentally wanders into the territory of the Scarlet Macaw tribe. Not content with this, Felipe, the chief of the tribe, makes a bet to decide who gets the entire Brazil nut orchard. Both tribes head to the Pit of Doom for a decisive soccer match. Blu ends up in the game and although he did pretty well, trying to prove his worth to the tribe, he accidentally ends up scoring for the other team, much to everyone's disappointment.

Blu then tells Pearl that he doesn't belong in the Amazon and wants to go home, but Pearl tries to reason with him that maybe the Amazon is his home, not Rio. The two then have an argument and Pearl accuses him of thinking of himself instead of how happy everyone is in the Amazon. (In a deleted scene, Blu is seen defending himself, accusing her of not truly loving him, of only choosing him as her only option at the time.) He then leaves with his fanny pack and GPS towards Linda and Tulio's camp, with Pearl secretly watching as she slowly regrets what she said to him.

Pepillo tries to attack Blu while he is sleeping, but his plan backfires because of Carlitos and Blu does not notice his presence, which accidentally causes the ship's speakers to sound, then Pearl, thinking that Tiago was the one who woke everyone up, scolds him saying: "Tiago! Be quiet!", and then he says he did not do anything but when no one believes him, Blu tells him to "obey his mother". The next day, the family arrives at the Amazon rainforest and soon meet the other blue macaws, Pearl is delighted to know that she and her family were not the only ones after all. The leader of the tribe, Eduardo, realizes that Blu brings with him many human things and attacks him, but Pearl immediately confronts him, however, Pearl recognizes Eduardo and realizes that he is her father. Eduardo feels proud to know that he is the grandfather of three grandchildren and thanks Blu for having returned his daughter to him. Later, Perla meets her aunt Mimi again. Perla is delighted to meet Roberto, her ex-boyfriend, but Blu feels somewhat jealous of him. Roberto dances with Perla to a song that the entire macaw tribe dances to, celebrating her arrival with joy, except Blu, who fails to fit in with the dance and sadly looks at Perla dancing with Roberto.

At night, Blu, Pearl, and their three children sleep in Roberto's nest, a giant hollow tree. At night, Blu dreams that he sings like Roberto and has a romantic moment with Pearl. Blu decides to get up early to find a Brazil nut, Pearl's favorite, and bring it to her before she wakes up. After hours of searching, Blu meets some monkeys who take his kangaroo bag and guide him away from the area. When he gets his kangaroo bag back, he finds the nut he was looking for and tries to get it out. Then, Blu realizes that he is in the territory of red macaws and that he was stealing their food. The red macaws declare war on the blues. When he informs Eduardo of this, he gets upset with him since they could lose their territory in the jungle and tries to keep his patience. At the place where the blues were going to face the reds, Blu is relieved to realize that the "war" was a soccer game. When a player of the blues gets injured, Eduardo has no choice but to let Blu enter the match, Blu seems to play very well, but without realizing it he scores an own goal and giving the victory to the reds and keeping the territory in the jungle, that caused the indignation of Eduardo and the others. Determined to leave the Amazon, Blu packs his fanny pack and tells Pearl that everyone would leave since he couldn't stand being in the jungle anymore. Pearl tells Blu to realize that she and the kids were happy living there and asks him to stop thinking about himself all the time and leaves. Blu, angry, decides to go look for Tulio and Linda, while Pearl watches Blu walk away sadly.
