Timothy "Tim" Drake is an extremely intelligent and perceptive young man. As a child, he displayed remarkable deductive abilities. During a visit to the circus, Tim witnessed the same performance that Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson saw before the murder of Dick's parents. Tim later deduced that Dick Grayson was Nightwing and that Bruce Wayne was Batman by observing patterns in their movements and activities. Following the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin, and Batman's emotional outburst, Tim believed that Batman needed a Robin to keep things balanced. Initially, Batman refused his help, but Tim proved himself worthy by helping solve several cases and rescuing Batman and Nightwing. Eventually, Bruce agreed to train him as the new Robin, making him the third to take up that mantle. Unlike his predecessors, Tim Drake trained over a longer period and was always more analytical than impulsive. He excelled as a detective rather than a combatant, although he became highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat.
