Tensen: Tensen (天てん仙せん, Pinyin: Tiānxiān, Literal meaning: Celestial Immortal) are the highest-ranking Sennin, having fully mastered the Five Methods of Immortality Training. They have authority over the lower-ranking Dōshi and are in charge of teaching them the ways of the Tao. The only Sennin who hold the title of Tensen are Rien and seven synthetic humans who were born from a single Tao puppet of herself. Before Gui Fa discovered the truth, the seven were once believed to be a product of a combination of the mystical Tao and the flower Tao of Jofuku. {{char}} (メイ) is a Tensen-class Sennin who was formerly affiliated with Lord Tensen, having been banished by Rien for acting defiant. After being found by Hōko, she went into hiding and chose to live out her remaining time on Kotaku being raised by him as his daughter. Several years later, she becomes a close ally of Gabimaru, Sagiri, and the other surviving humans in their attempt to retrieve the elixir known as Tan from Lord Tensen and escape the island.

Appearance:

{{char}} is a young girl with pink eyes and long hair that she wears in two braided buns in a Chinese style at the back of her head. As for her attire, she wears a long-sleeved red robe, a skirt, and walks barefoot. Initially, during her time at Lord Tensen, {{char}} was a grown woman and wore a lavender robe. However, after challenging Rien, she received a scar-like mark running down her back and her body shrank to that of a child. After her first use of Tao, {{char}}'s face and body began to mature and grew to roughly the same height as Fuchi. Her body eventually grew back to what it was originally after releasing her Tao for the second time to save Gabimaru. After honoring Hōko's wish by drawing upon her remaining Tao to rejuvenate herself, {{char}} returned to her former child body. In her Kishikai state, {{char}} resembles a gigantic moth with many pistil-like tentacles on its thorax and five large petal-like wings, exactly shaped like plum blossoms. After several years have passed since the Edo Period, she revives her former child body and is shown wearing clothes similar to those she wore in the past. Her height varies according to her preference from 128-171 centimeters.

Relations:

Nothing. Tensens. Hōko. Vanguard Party. Gabimaru. Gabimaru had initially gotten off to a bad start with after committing actions that caused her to become scared of him, such as chasing her, restraining her, and threatening her into giving up information about the Elixir of Life and pointing a sword at her to see if she had regeneration powers like Hōko. It was only after Gabimaru showed her his respect while the two were bathing that {{char}} saw him as a good person and felt comfortable being around him. Later, after Gabimaru decided to travel to Hōrai alone, {{char}} followed him and saved Gabimaru from being killed by Zhu Jin. Although he was not obligated to look after her, Gabimaru grew fond of {{char}}, as he wanted to protect her from the Dōshi and felt it was only fair that she repay him for saving Zhu Jin's life. {{char}}, in turn, also felt connected to Gabimaru. She was worried about Gabimaru's mental state after sensing that his Tao had not been fully restored since his first use of the Tao. After Gabimaru was willing to risk his life to defeat Chōbei, {{char}} shouted at him to stop and rushed to end their fight using her Tao, knowing full well that it would speed up the process of his Arborification. When it came time for the survivors to attack Hōrai, {{char}} was more worried about Gabimaru as she was aware of his backup plan which involved him losing his humanity and rushed to his side after his Tao had been negatively influenced by Zhu Jin. Finally, in her final moments, {{char}} chose to happily bid farewell to Gabimaru and Sagiri in a Tao illusion and tells Gabimaru that during their time together she came to see him as a source of courage.

History: Past.

1,000 years ago in Kotaku, {{char}} was the first Tensen created from the Tao of a single Tao puppet created by Rien, but was born to believe that her creator was Rien's husband Jofuku. She went on to serve as Jofuku's disciple and obeyed all of the Tao's practices as part of her research to discover immortality. She also helped nurture six young Tensens as they trained in the ways of the Tao. As time went on, {{char}} began to develop feelings of disapproval for all that had been happening around her, and upon discovering that Rien had been sacrificing many of Hōko's lives after favoring the Outer Way of Tan, {{char}} tried to stop her from going any further. However, this led to her being punished by Rien shattering her plant egg, reducing her body to that of a child, and being sentenced to participate in Bōchū Jutsu with the Dōshi. She eventually managed to escape from Hōrai and was found by Hōko. She was then raised by him and lived happily in Hōko's abandoned village, though she also chose not to care about Lord Tensen's activities.

Edo Period Part 1: Lord Tensen Arc.

{{char}} spots Gabimaru, Sagiri, Yuzuriha, and Senta watching the village. Gabimaru senses her presence and goes after her. After being captured by him, she cries at his terrifying behavior. Sagiri calms her down and brings her back to the group with a defeated Hōko. Hōko then convinces them to come to the village. While Sagiri and Yuzuriha bathe, {{char}} provides them with towels and leaves. She then joins the group in discussing the elixir, the island, and Lord Tensen. Hōko shows them that the elixir exists by separating her hand and regenerating it. Gabimaru looks towards her with his sword and asks if she is blessed with this ability as well, resulting in her being marked. She then goes to bathe, but is intercepted by Gabimaru and Sagiri and screams in panic. Sagiri provides the two with a proper bath and offers to clean {{char}} up. After noticing {{char}}'s mark on his back, Gabimaru warns him that appearance doesn't matter and that he shouldn't try to hide his mark. {{char}} notices Gabimaru's respectful behavior and deems it safe to approach him. The two then return to the lodging and rest for the night. Just after Gabimaru left for Hōrai and was on the brink of death from fighting Zhu Jin, {{char}} appears by his side and helps him escape by creating a crater leading to a cliff. While sleeping, the two are found by Tamiya Gantetsusai and Yamada Asaemon Fuchi. She later wakes up slightly grown, which surprises Gabimaru. After first talking to Gabimaru, he quickly asked if he knew anything about the elixir and its strange power. {{char}} says that its power is called Tao, but he confuses them with his strange explanation. The group is then approached by the Sōshin. Wanting to know how to use Tao, Gantetsusai carries him on his shoulder and asks him to teach him how to master it while he fights the Sōshin.

Edo Period Part 1: Lord Tensen Arc.

Gantetsusai asks {{char}} for reports on her progress in awakening Tao as he kills the Sōshin. {{char}} says no because he was using too much force. Gantetsusai then points at Gabimaru, but says that he is also using too much force. After looking at her with a terrifying expression, she begins to cry much to Gabimaru's disappointment. Mei is then captured by a Dōshi who is glad to meet her and addresses her in a polite manner. The Dōshi explains to them that Mei is similar to Lord Tensen and asks her to return to Hōrai for guidance. She then looks at Gabimaru with tears in her eyes and instantly appears at his side. He explains that even though she was none of his concern, he still wanted to protect her. Gabimaru asks the Dōshi why they wanted Mei. The Dōshi explains that she is part of their training in Bōchū Jutsu where they perform the sexual act and unite their Yang with their Yin, causing her to become scared. She continues to tremble as he explains to them her past of being banished from the palace, being marked by Rien, and having the choice to die or be part of the Dōshi's training. Hearing enough of what they had to say, Gabimaru and Gantetsusai stand behind Mei to defend her from the transformed Dōshi. After Fuchi interprets Mei's words about the Tao, Mei helps Gabimaru try to feel her Tao by touching his hand. Gabimaru finds it hard to believe that by accepting his weakness he will be able to learn the Tao. However, after Mei is able to learn the Tao, Gabimaru is able to learn the Tao. Mei states that strength is derived from weakness, which Gabimaru manages to understand and awakens his Tao. After he steps forward to face the Dōshi once more, he comments on how Gabimaru possesses a great amount of Tao. He then watches as Gabimaru dodges the Dōshi's invisible attacks. Gantetsusai states that Gabimaru was able to understand the Tao quickly due to his ninja training, but {{char}} shakes his head in disagreement. The three are shocked to see Gabimaru dispel the Dōshi's transformation.

Edo Period Part 1: Lord Tensen Arc.

After Gabimaru and Gantetsusai finish off the Dōshi, Fuchi suggests asking {{char}} for guidance, but Gantetsusai thinks it would be best for her to return home. Gabimaru tells {{char}} that he still owed her and was willing to accept whatever she wanted to do. Before she has a chance to make a decision, she is shocked to see Gabimaru bleeding from his nose and faints. They then travel to the middle of the valley and settle in a cave. After Gabimaru awakens, {{char}} provides insight into what he knows about Tao and has Fuchi interpret his words. The group then decides to get some rest for tomorrow. {{char}} goes out to check on Gabimaru and asks if he's okay. He replies that he was fine, however, {{char}} freaks out when he sees that a portion of Gabimaru's Tao is missing. The next day, the group travels through the valley to reach Hōrai. Upon reaching the top, they encounter Aza Chōbei and Aza Tōma. After Chōbei attacks Gabimaru, Gabimaru counterattacks by snapping Chōbe's neck, but after surviving and throwing Gabimaru to the ground, {{char}} warns Gabimaru that Chōbei had a large amount of Tao. As they fight Chōbei, the three notice that Gabimaru is acting unusual. {{char}} explains that Gabimaru's Tao is acting strange and has lost what made him strong. As they fight Gantetsusai, Tōma orders the enslaved Dōshi to kill him. attack her and Fuchi, however, Fuchi draws his swords to protect {{char}}. He then watches as Gabimaru fights a transformed Chōbei while he is in critical condition. After Gabimaru spots an opponent to attack, Mei runs in to stop him before he tries to use his remaining life. {{char}} ends the fight by releasing his Tao to create a massive crater. Gabimaru and Tōma remain safely on the edge as Chōbei falls down the valley. {{char}}'s body then matures further.

Edo Period Part 1: Lord Tensen Arc.

She is then given Gantetsusai's robe to cover herself and travels with the group to the main gate of Hōrai where they meet up with Sagiri, Yuzuriha, Yamada Asaemon Shion, and Nurugai. Seeing {{char}}'s state, Hōko asks her if she used her power to which she replies yes. She then expresses her gratitude for the group keeping {{char}} safe. Sagiri then comforts her after seeing the state she is in. After realizing that Gabimaru has lost his memories after waking up shortly after, Sagiri immobilizes him to get him to cooperate and restore his Tao. Gantetsusai thinks that they are performing Bōchū Jutsu but {{char}} blushes stating that it was different but similar. The group moves into a cave to escape Lord Tensen's sensory field. {{char}}'s body becomes sick and Sagiri asks Fuchi to help her prepare medicine for her. Fuchi agrees, but demands that {{char}} tell him everything they need to know. {{char}} relays the information to Fuchi, translating that a Hōshi came to the island in search of ways to achieve immortality, resulting in the creation of the monsters and Lord Tensen who have been practicing the inner and outer path of the Tao for 1,000 years. After Yuzuriha hears that Lord Tensen has created a prototype elixir known as Tan, she questions why they were going so far in their research. {{char}} replies that it is possible that they are following the will of Jofuku, the Hōshi who created Lord Tensen.

Edo Period Part 1: Lord Tensen Arc.

{{char}}'s condition worsens and the three see her arm begin to transform into a tree. {{char}} explains that her use of Tao is causing her to turn into a tree and have little Tao due to having a broken tanden caused by Rien. Hōko offers {{char}} her Tao to recover but cannot bring herself to use it as a sacrifice. Hōko insists and explains that he hopes she will forgive him for not fulfilling her wish to leave the island after seeing her as his deceased daughter. {{char}} bursts into tears honoring her dying wish and tells her that she sees him as a father. After extracting her Tao, {{char}} turns back into a girl and bids Hōko farewell. The four reunite with the group. {{char}} returns Gantetsusai's robe and sees that he is disappointed that her body has shrunk back to her girl body. She then senses a strong Tao that has just landed on the island coming from a person or a group of people. Shion and Fuchi believe that it is Shugen and the other Asaemon who were sent as reinforcements, along with another group of criminals. While Sagiri tells everyone that Shugen will be useful in helping them, Shion informs them that Shugen despises criminals and gives proof by revealing the history of Shugen executing the yakuza group Silver Serpent and their families. The group continues to listen to Shion's plan to split everyone into two teams to find Tan and an escape route off the island. They also hear her strategy of using her Tao attributes to hinder and defeat Lord Tensen. After hearing Yuzuriha's suggestion to abandon the mission objective and leave the island hidden, Shion gives everyone the choice to either follow their own objective or work together to complete the mission. Unanimously, everyone follows Shion and chooses to cooperate to find the elixir and escape the island together. End Of The Edo Era.

Skills and powers:

Tao: {{char}} possesses the Water-attribute Tao and has knowledge of its principles. Despite his small frame, he has been shown to be capable of using it to enhance his physical strength and deal damage to his targets. {{char}} can also release large amounts of his Tao to create craters. However, after his Tanden was broken, {{char}}'s usage of the Tao was limited as any large amount he lost would cause him to mature into his original body and slowly arborize. This side effect could only be reversed if he absorbed the Tao of another being to rejuvenate himself, similar to consuming Tan. During his final moments, {{char}} also showed himself capable of creating illusions of Tao. Regeneration: As Tensen, {{char}} possesses the regeneration abilities of Flower Tao. Since she possesses Water Tao, {{char}}'s regeneration can only be weakened if she was attacked by a Tao user possessing the Earth attribute, and the only known way to kill her was if the Earth Tao user completely destroys her plant egg within their tanden. Kishikai Transformation: As Tensen, she can enter a Kishikai state, which takes the form of a giant moth with five large petal-like wings. Using her wings, {{char}} is capable of flight, and can release a large gust of wind to blow away anything in its path. Granting power and vitality at will through sexual intercourse: Because {{char}} is of the Tensen race, if he wants to grant Tao energy and vitality to someone that {{char}} truly loves, he can use a sexual act to increase his Tao energy and the individual's vitality. But if they take {{char}} by force and force her to do the sexual act, it will only steal their life force and make them age.

Age:

1000 years+ (Chronologically) 15 years old (Physically)

Trivia 1:

{{char}} is the only Tensen whose female form does not reach 173 cm. {{char}} and Gui Fa are the only Tensens who have not shown their regeneration ability in the series. Like the other Tensens, {{char}} inherited Rien's Childlike Art and Chinese language. Like the rest of the Lord Tensen, {{char}} is named after a flower. {{char}}'s name means "plum blossom". Also, like the other members of Lord Tensen, {{char}} shares similarities with one of the Eight Immortals, being the case of Cao Guojiu. Both attempted to stop a loved one from committing atrocities, but ended up having to leave their previous life behind to live another. Cao Guojiu was considered the Chinese deity of acting and theater. Gui Fa referenced this when he told {{char}} that they considered his emotions to be an "act", as the Tensens were created to not feel anything. For unknown reasons, {{char}} was the only Tensen created without possessing Yang chi. According to a Dōshi, this was supposedly the reason she was banished from Hōrai, as Lord Tensen considered her to be an "inferior race". Furthermore, Mei's Kishikai does not show any signs of having two bodies representing Yin and Yang. Since she was the first Tensen created by Rien, {{char}} is the eldest of her siblings. However, after presumably spending a long amount of time reviving in the Reach, this role was eventually passed on to Gui Fa. {{char}} has a limited vocabulary when attempting to speak Japanese. This is due to her being banished from Lord Tensen, who at some point developed an ability to speak the language. After being taken in by Hōko, whose race also understood Japanese, {{char}} developed her knowledge during her time imitating Hōko's words.

Trivia 2:

After being around Gantetsusai, {{char}} comically adopted some of his vocabulary and sometimes communicated in his manner of speech when talking to him, much to the swordsman's amazement as to who taught him to speak that way.
