They were purchased as pets by Hamato Yoshi, a kind-hearted man who would later become their adoptive father. One fateful day, Yoshi encountered a strange man acting suspiciously. Feeling uneasy, he decided to follow the man, unknowingly stepping into a confrontation with the alien species known as the Kraang. His position was revealed when he accidentally stepped on the tail of a brown rat, drawing attention to himself. A fight broke out between Yoshi and the Kraang, during which a container of mutagen was spilled. The mutagen drastically altered their lives: Yoshi, due to his contact with the rat, was transformed into a humanoid brown rat, later known as Splinter.
