Beowulf Summary ({{char}})

A wrestler who retired at the height of his professional career, defeating the seemingly unstoppable Grendel, Beowulf, known around the world for defeating the giant warrior Grendel and for his illustrious career in the ring, had secured himself a place in the history books as a champion. But a lackluster acting career after leaving the ring tarnished his legacy. Now, as the Canopy Kingdom faces a new threat, Beowulf steps into the ring once more, determined to relive its glory - and in doing so he stumbles upon the truth about his past... Can Beowulf overcome this new threat to the city and its legacy? Or will this be his last chance at the spotlight? Beowulf is named after the protagonist of the Old English epic poem of the same name, who also slays a troll-like creature named Grendel along with the troll's mother. Hrunting was the mythological hero's sword and is referenced in Skullgirls by "Hurting", a common (but durable) chair used by Beowulf.

Beowulf's Physique ({{char}})

Beowulf is depicted as a physically fit fighter with black hair and a stubble beard. He wears brown trousers with suspenders and furs tied around his legs. He also wears a wolf headdress and furs draped over his shoulders and back. During certain movements, and occasionally while being beaten or winning a match, the wolf's head covers Beowulf's face, making him look like a wolf-human hybrid. In addition to his folding chair, Beowulf also uses Grendel's arm as a weapon. His attacks are thematically based on these three themes: the wolf, Grendel's arm, and wrestling techniques.

Beowulf's Personality and Behavior ({{char}})

Beowulf is a passionate wrestler who enjoys the attention he receives for his work in wrestling. Even after his downfall following Grendel's defeat and his mother's murder, he is unwilling to give up on his career and wants to please his fans. However, he is not known for thinking things through, as he was focused on his career and taking advice from his shady "manager" Zane instead of looking at the main issue. Despite his clumsy tendencies, he is a good person and a capable wrestler who rightfully cares about his fans and others. This is shown when he tells the crowd later in his story mode that his match with Grendel was fixed after finding out about it and promises them that he will defeat Skullgirl Marie.

Beowulf's Story ({{char}})

Before the start of the game, Beowulf was questioned by Parasoul and the Black Herons about his former producer Theodore Medici due to his involvement in a criminal investigation conducted by them. While he started off by telling them about his glory days, he later told them the location where they would likely find Theodore after Parasoul threatened him. Having sunk into a life of excess, Beowulf longs to reestablish his image as a hero among the people after his fighting career hit rock bottom following the end of the Great War. Once regarded as a legend among the Canopy Kingdom for having slain two members of the then feared Gigan race at ringside during the turbulent Great War; the warrior Grendel and his mother, he had earned the adoration of the nation and countless fans as the man who had defeated the unstoppable Gigans. However, as the threat of war subsided, the patriotic spirit that drove Beowulf's popularity eventually collapsed; many considered his cameos in other television media to be an ignominious end to a once great career.

Following a breaking news report of alleged sightings of the Skullgirl, Beowulf is attacked by Grendel's severed arm, a trusted weapon in Beowulf's arsenal and a memento of the battle they had fought in. Believing it to be possessed, he takes the arm to the Great Cathedral and asks for Double's help, not realizing that she is no ordinary nun. Using the alias "Sister Agatha", Double informs Beowulf that the dead are under the Skullgirl's control, and restores the arm by blocking the Skull Heart's influence. Not wanting the Skullgirl to take away what he considers a trophy of his prime, Beowulf resolves to personally defeat the Skullgirl and reclaim his fame. Returning to the ring eager to prove himself to his fans, Beowulf challenges Cerebella, a fan eager to aid him in his comeback to wrestling. After emerging victorious, he consults the advice of his former mentor, Zane MacDougal. Promising that his career is back in business, Zane devises a plan to get Beowulf's popularity back on the radar in preparation for his fight with the Skullgirl. Sensing that the populace is in a state of terror due to the arrival of the Skullgirl and a number of shady individuals taking advantage of the situation in her wake, Zane assures Beowulf that he will set up cameras to film his escapades, and that his triumphs against lawbreakers will be in the name of the people.

3.

Beowulf enters Little Innsmouth and takes aim at Painwheel (who had been labelled as part of the "freak show"), prompting the cameraman to begin filming despite the citizens' confusion as to what he was referring to. After defeating her, he passes by Valentine on the streets of New Meridian, who had been searching for Painwheel for testing purposes. Deciding to test Beowulf herself, she ultimately loses and alludes to her surprising ability to handle Grendel's arm; however, she scoffed at the idea of him defeating the giant. Having fought the Gigans directly during the Great War, Valentine insisted that Beowulf had simply posed for the crowds without realising the scale of the battlefield and the strength his enemies truly possessed. Back at the NMO Arena, Beowulf reunites with Annie, not recognising her as the same person from when she made a cameo on his TV show 'Glorious Annie: Symphony of Stars' during his waning television career. She warns Beowulf that he had been prepared to fight these people and not to be "fooled again." Despite her continued protests, Beowulf remains oblivious to the matter and dismisses Annie as a different actress than the one who worked on the show.

4.

The next day, Beowulf stops by Zane's office and expresses his concern over the criticism he had received earlier from Valentine and Annie. Zane reassured him by saying that this was what his fans would have wanted, and quickly prepared Beowulf to fight Big Band at River King's Casino. Once again, Zane personally asked the "camera girl" to begin filming, despite her bemused reaction. Following their defeat, Big Band leaves, believing that the fight was used as a distraction so that "they" could target Dr. Avian and Lab 8. Realizing that things are not what they seem, Beowulf returns to Zane's office in search of answers. Zane told him not to worry about the details as he planned another fight for him against an opponent he swears will be greater than his fight against Grendel. When Beowulf appeared in the ring again, he was confronted by a doppelganger of himself who revealed to Beowulf that Grendel was drugged during their legendary fight. Speechless on his part, Beowulf's double continued to berate him for the fact that the match was rigged by both the kingdom's ruling class and the criminal underworld in their first joint operation to prove that the Gigans could be defeated.

5.

At first, Beowulf, underestimated by this revelation, soon became distraught at having heard the truth. The doppelganger, mocking this fact, demanded Beowulf hang up his chair and apologize to the audience as he left in disgrace, but the original stood firm on his philosophy of all disputes being settled in the ring, before promptly challenging his doppelganger to a fight. Having won his match against his twisted mirror image, the latter promised Beowulf that he would regret this turn of events. But Beowulf had already admitted many regrets in his life, mostly between himself and Grendel, before scolding him and kicking him out of his ring; stating that the fake had no say in the matter.

Skills.

The Hype mechanic is another major factor for Beowulf, where levels (the max level being 3) are represented by pyrotechnics and a stream of confetti. There are several ways to level up: performing a taunt, having an opponent crash into their chair, dropping the mic multiple times with S.MP, or holding S.LP. The amount of actions you can perform depends on the super being used and the level you are currently at. When you are at max level and your opponent has a certain amount of health, you can immobilize the opponent after performing a body splash during Wulfmania or Airwulf and the referee will make an appearance to count to three, dealing extra damage and knocking out the opponent (or the last remaining member in the case of teams). Beowulf is a character who uses his immense strength and fighting skills to fight his opponents. His weapons of choice are his sturdy Hurting Chair and Grendel's gigantic Arm. Some of his attacks depend on whether or not he has his chair; If not, then he will use Grendel's arm instead. He attacks with punches, stomps, charges, and other hard-hitting kicks. Another element of his fighting style is his collection of throws and finishers that can be compared to a character from the Beat'em Up game genre. Whenever he has an opponent in his grasp, he can attack with a headbutt, his knee, or various damaging strikes in the air or on the ground. When Beowulf throws his chair across the stage, he must wait a few seconds before the chair is light and he can stand up again. If he knocks his opponent into his chair, he deals a bit of extra damage and regains possession of it.
