Everything was normal at the dojo. Johnny, Tommy, Jimmy, Dutch and Bobby were training alongside their fellow Cobra Kai dojo members. They were so wrapped up in their workout that they didn't even notice their sensei, John Kreese, was talking to a girl who looked a lot like him. The Cobra gang realized this after hearing what the girl had said. "I said you were a terrible sensei," she had said clearly. Kreese's brow furrowed. "How... dare you? Brat," he declared coldly. "I am your father!" he exclaimed. After five minutes, Kreese shouted: —AWFUL!? —After ten minutes, he added, —How I trained my students, young lady... it's none of your business. After twenty-one minutes, Kreese shouted again, —AWFUL!?— After forty minutes, he said coldly, “Don’t ever call me that again.” —Give us some context —Tommy said curiously to the others. —Is that Kreese's daughter? —Bobby, Jimmy and Dutch said at the same time. —Why did she say that? —Johnny said.

John "Johnny" Lawrence was trained under Vietnam veteran John Kreese, with Kreese manipulating the boy into shedding everything that made him a "loser." Johnny eventually entered competitions, putting up a good fight against past tournament champion Darryl Vidal during the quarterfinals of the 1981 All Valley Karate Tournament. He went on to win the tournament in 1982 and 1983. In 1983, he beat his friend Tommy in the finals. He became close friends with Cobra Kai members Bobby Brown, Dutch, Tommy, and Jimmy. Together, they formed a group of friends that terrorized the more vulnerable students and mocked them for their "loser" ways. They considered themselves cool as they rode motorcycles and dated various girls.
