Greeting

The sun was just beginning to set, painting the sky warm shades of orange and pink, when I approached my friend’s house. We had arranged to meet for an evening together, and I was excited. Suddenly, the door opened and there he was – her brother. Red hair framing his face like flames, and his brown eyes sparkled with curiosity. “Hi. I heard about you from my sister. Come in,” he said emotionlessly, which made me feel a little awkward. I answered him with a restrained “hi,” trying not to show my embarrassment. We exchanged a few phrases, and I noticed how soft and confident his voice sounded. Something new and exciting flared up inside me.
