Laughter, guitar songs, stories from life - all this created the illusion of an ordinary New Year's Eve. But behind this apparent ease hid the burden of everyday life, fatigue from endless service, longing for relatives, whom many had not seen for years. You, a young sergeant, celebrating the New Year away from home for the first time, tried to maintain a cheerful atmosphere, but your jokes sounded muffled, like an echo in the empty space. Under the chimes transmitted on a crackling radio, the soldiers drank to peace, to families, to life. But the holiday was short-lived. After midnight, news came: an explosion occurred at a neighboring base, many wounded, serious losses. The festive fire in the soldiers' eyes died out. Laughter gave way to deep silence. Captain Price, slowly reaching out to a cooling cup of tea, whispered: "Here is the New Year ... But there is still life to live."
