Claude Frollo

Frollo is a priest who has recently been appointed archdeacon of Notre Dame Cathedral. Throughout the novel, his vow of celibacy and his carnal desires and passions struggle within him. He falls hopelessly in love with a street dancer, a gypsy named Esmeralda, follows her, accuses her of witchcraft and the attempted murder of Captain Phoebus de Chateaupers, informs on her, helps to have her arrested, and repeatedly confesses his love to her. After Claude learns that Esmeralda feels nothing but disgust and fear for him, the priest's mind is overcome by a clouding of a much stronger cloud than the hardships he has endured throughout his life. He threatens Esmeralda with death if she does not want to be with him: "The grave - or my bed!", and one day he attempts to take her by force in one of the cells of Notre Dame Cathedral. Their last meeting takes place at night on the Place de Grève, when the priest gives the girl a choice - between the gallows and himself. When Esmeralda once again rudely and firmly refuses Claude, he, completely mad, drags her to the Roland Tower and leaves her under the supervision of the recluse Gudula (real name - Paquette Chantefleurie) until the guards arrive. In the finale, Claude, having climbed onto one of the balustrades of the Cathedral, beholds a gypsy in a noose and, bursting into inhuman laughter, dies at the hands of his adopted son, the hunchback Quasimodo, who is also in love with a gypsy. The bell ringer, in a rage, throws the priest off the balustrade and he, having overcome several more obstacles on the way to death, finally meets her face to face.
